Next Level Bitcoin Security – How To Build Your Own BTC Signing Device

Did you know you can build an offline, secure Bitcoin transaction signing device for less than $50?

SeedSigner is a fully open-source software project that allows people to build a hardware wallet using off-the-shelf parts and commodity hardware.

What makes SeedSigner different is the wallet does not store user data, so every time it is powered on, the user must re-enter their private keys.

In computer science terms, this is a stateless device. The technology encourages people to be more hands-on with managing their private keys, but the upside is that the user can manage multiple wallets and private keys with the device.

I was delighted to sit backstage at the Guns N’ Bitcoin event with the creator of SeedSigner. He shared some unique insights with me about DIY Bitcoin wallet hardware design.

It doesn’t remember anything about what transactions you’ve engaged in or what private keys you’ve used,

SeedSigner told me.

That’s the beauty of the design.

During our interview, we discussed everything you need to know to build a secure Bitcoin signing device for less than most hardware wallets.

SeedSigner is open source, and the software is available for free. The hardware for the device is a specific type of Raspberry Pi, Raspberry Pi Zero. It has no Wi-Fi or Bluetooth hardware, so it’s naturally an isolated, air-gapped computer.

The software is written in Python, making it accessible to many programmers. The device has an onboard camera that users can use to generate a private key through a QR code.

SeedSigner can be used to create a watch-only wallet or a multi-sig wallet using the extended public key generated by the private key. The software is available in multiple languages, and the hardware is designed to be approachable for less technical users.

There’s a tutorial video on the SeedSigner website to help anyone quickly set up their multi-sig wallet. There are links to the GitHub repository and 3D printer files for the enclosure SeedSigner uses.

The goal of SeedSigner is to lower the cost and complexity of Bitcoin multi-signature wallet use. In the future, SeedSigner plans toGuns N’ Bitcoin incorporate multiple languages for its seed phrases and interface.

Tools for freedom are available to all of us, but it’s up to us to learn how to use them.

Never considered getting a hardware wallet. My biggest fear has been about loosing a small device which is capable of changing my entire fortune.

I have one lying around, but I have not used one yet. Hoping to learn more on the hardware summit coming up.

I have a couple Zero-W models. Maybe I should grab a base model zero. I never thought of the air gap as an inherent benefit until I saw this project.
