Private: Not Your Keys, Not Your Coins – The Foundation of Operational Security

How many hardware wallets do you know of that are fully open-source and made in the USA?

Thanks to Boston-based Foundation Devices, Bitcoiners now have access to a new tool for their arsenal. For those who want to take self-custody to new heights, the Passport is a hardware wallet not to be overlooked.

I had the pleasure of sitting with Cofounder & CEO Zach Herbert at the recent Guns N Bitcoin conference in Miami, where I got a first-hand look at this beautifully designed device.

Every aspect of the Passport has been intelligently crafted for maximum security with multi-sig capability, a USB-C power-only cable, zero wireless communications, and a discrete phone-like design.

What makes Foundation unique is their focus on self-sovereignty by embracing the actual mechanics of Bitcoin transactions. In line with their company mantra, Zach shares that “Bitcoin is already hard enough for someone to figure out. You shouldn’t have to also learn how to use a hardware wallet.”

On that point, we agree.

Being a bitcoin miner myself, I admittedly get excited about bitcoin hardware.

Holding the Passport in my hand, I had to admit, “This feels damn good.”

With a large hardened glass display, intuitive UI, physical keypad, and a broad range of compatible software wallets, Zach and the team at Foundation have succeeded in easing the adoption of Bitcoin with this sleek, modern device. They even offer private onboarding sessions.

Zach shares that regarding hardware wallets, “The experience hasn’t really changed.” So, in April of 2020 the company was launched to fill a need. This is the spirit of Bitcoin entrepreneurship in action. Constant evolution and improvement.
