Witnesses are people who run servers to secure the blockchain.
Some witnesses like me also provide additional services to the ecosystem and do their best to promote Steem.
You can vote for up to 30 witnesses or define someone else as your "witness proxy", meaning your account will behave as your proxy and be considered voting for the same witnesses as your proxy.
