What is Disc Golf? And How to Get Started.

in #discgolf6 years ago

Disc Golf is one of my favorite sports to play for many different reasons. Disc Golf is inexpensive, easy to learn but hard to master, for all ages and skill levels, can play when ever you have spare time and you don't need a team to play.

What is Disc Golf?
Disc Golf was created in the 1970's. It is played like regular Golf with 9-18 holes but instead of using a ball and clubs players use a disc or a "frisbee", as some like to call it. The scoring in Disc Golf is also the same as "regular Golf". The lower the score the better.

Your first throw is from the tee box area. Then where ever your disc lands is where you take your next shot from. With the end destination being a metal basket with chains hanging from it. The chains act as a stopper and will help the disc to fall in the basket.

What do You Need to Play?
Instead of having Golf clubs, balls and tee's like in regular golf all Disc Golf requires is a disc. The disc's are broken down in to three categories. Drivers, mid-range and putters. You can buy packs of three for $20-$30 that will include a driver, mid-range and a putter. Just looking to buy one? Then I would recommend a mid-range.

After you have been playing for a wile you might want to start expanding the amount of disc's you have. Within each category of disc there are different styles and disc's that fly slightly different from each other. Once you get the hang of playing and how to through them I would suggest experimenting with different disc to improve you game.

Where Can You Play?
Surprisingly many city parks have Disc Golf courses and most of them are free to play. If they do charge it is usually only a few bucks. There are also courses built into some regular golf courses. These are usually pay to play courses. With over 5000 courses in the USA you should be able to find one near you. If you are having trouble finding a place to play go to PDGA.com/courses and the Professional Disc Golf Association will help you find one close.

There are quite a few different styles of courses. My personal favorite type of course is when there is a even mixture of open and wooded shots. Now go out and find your local Disc Golf course and give it a whirl. I bet you'll like it more that you think.

I've wondered about this. Seen 'em around, but never played it. What I just learned is, there are different discs for different distances, just like in golf. I never knew that.

Hey @davedickeyyall, I found another Steemian for you to disc golf with if you ever nomad over in their direction!

Posted using Partiko Android

I was just going to say the same thing HA HA. Let Dave know about this guy. Dave has a Bitcoin disc he had made.

The maker is on Steemit, too, and accepts Steem as payment!

May have to look into one of those Bitcoin discs

@disctattoo is the person, I believe :)

Awesome run down! I have been playing disc golf for probably 10 years or so now. I am haven't been out in a while, but I am hoping to play one of my local courses soon and get some shots of the holes to do a post about it. Thanks for sharing this. More people need to be aware of the awesomeness that is disc golf!

Yeah I don't play as much as I'd like either. But with this starting to cool down I plan on playing more

Good luck with that! How many courses do you have near you? I only have two that are within 5 to 10 minutes.

Hey @hopfarmnc! I (@ericwilson) created this account to help bring disc golfers together on Steemit! I am going to give you a follow, upvote, and resteem! I try to resteem all disc golf content.

Those are all some good starter discs, do you have others? How long have you been playing?

Thank you @ddiscgolf.

I've been playing for a few years. I don't play as often as I would like. I lost all my good disc. LOL need to get some more

I would be happy to send you one! What do you like?

Looks fun! I used to play something like this when I was a little kid. Sure I will try again. Thank's for sharing!
