RE: When the Citizens are disarmed

in #discussion7 years ago

The prick should be locked up for a long time for this attack and terrifying somebody like that but it does make me think that if this was in America there's a good chance that the driver would be terrified and also dead because he would have been shot by that lunatic.
We're quite happy with strict gun laws here in the UK. I would rather take my chances against someone brandishing a knife (even a huge one) than someone brandishing a gun.
Just to say that I have never once been worried about being shot (or stabbed for that matter) in the UK.

By the way I know that my "in America the driver would have been shot" is a wild generalisation but claiming that more guns over here would make our streets safer is just as wild.

Sort:

claiming that more guns over here would make our streets safer is just as wild.

Inconvenient facts...

read all about it.

the future of the UK

Your crime rate dropping is fantastic news, I had no idea that it had dropped so much, I'm personally pleased because I have immediate family and very close friends living in America and I want them be as safe as possible.
I'll assume that your just as pleased that our crime rate in the UK has dropped in a similar fashion over a similar time scale, in fact it was the early to mid 90s when we tightened up our gun laws after a mass shooting. The stricter laws were in fact introduced after 2 mass shootings in the 90's and unfortunately have failed to completely alleviate the problem as we have had ONE MASS SHOOTING SINCE 1996. (USA - lots, way too many)
Gun related killings as a % of all homicides is still an out of control 4.5% in the UK (64% USA)
Check out our office for national statistics for all the figures.

Look, people in the UK don't want to take away your guns in the US, we also know that countries like Switzerland and Finland have high levels of gun ownership without too many problems but we are happy with our extremely low levels of gun ownership and our mainly firearm free police force and our total ignorance of gunshot wounds because the vast majority of people have never seen one or know anybody who has had one.
Please don't pretend that our country id descending into violence because one dickhead pulls out a knife on the street, its not and we won't be getting more guns in a hurry either.

London shooting - Man blasted with 'machine gun' and another knifed

Crime Rate Lower in United States, Canada Than in Britain

Don't believe the hype, incidents like this are very rare, unfortunately POTUS has been getting facts from far right groups (the leader of said group being imprisoned this week) but hopefully you have a level of intelligence above the knuckle draggers that tend to follow them.
No go areas are non existent in the UK.
No London hospitals are like war zones.
All that BS is being pushed by god knows who for fuck knows what reason, just come over and see for yourself, you'll get a warm and friendly welcome.

right...don't believe any of the bad news...unless it's about the USA..then all the bad news is definitely true.

but don't believe it about the UK...the UK is all sweetness and light and cookies and milk.

gotcha.

I think you missed my point, or I didn't explain myself properly, there was a big story over here about Trump retweeting Britain First and another official describing London hospitals being like war zones but both points are wild exaggerations. It just feels like there are falsehoods about the UK doing the rounds.
Everything isn't sweetness and light but nor are there lunatics wielding machetes on every corner. The truth of course is somewhere in between but not very close to either extreme,
Like I said, come and see for yourself, I sent my own 12 year old daughter across to you guys a couple of months ago to visit family. I knew she wasn't going to be having out "in the hood" or looking for crystal meth (too much Breaking Bad influencing me?) so I didn't worry too much about her.
So no we don't believe all the bad news, we try to read between the lines.

I'm a vietnam era vet.
I received combat pay.
I'd be scared to death to visit England.
