Plastic Is NOT Fantastic

I don’t have a zero plastic policy in my life but for many things it’s the worst fucking choice no matter which way you look. I’m good with Tupperware, bikinis and plastic soda bottles, but as a flooring, I fucking hate it.

We sadly have a couple rooms with plastic floors and they will require a full renovation which is very expensive, but this little porch with its plastic carpet bullshit is doable.

I got this idea on a whim and because I have undiagnosed ADHD, when I get inspired I immediately jump on to execution mode, even after a long day at work, with zero knowledge or planning. Mistakes will be made because I don’t listen and eventually the man has to come and rescue the project, but things are going to get done and they’ll be done fast. I ain’t got time to let the inspiration go flat.

When I’m a dictator, putting down plastic flooring will be a fineable offence, and glueing it down to make it near impossible to remove will be punishable by death. There will be a government funded program to help people get rid of plastic surfaces and renovate spaces that have been ruined before the start of my reign.

I don’t care what the reasoning is; pets, kids, insulation, saving money, plastic is not the answer when the question is about flooring.

Plastic floors are both a mental and physical risk to health.

We took turns in the 3 square metre porch and it took us almost 5! hours to rip the carpet off. Fucking ridiculous. Underneath was a beautiful and traditional wood floor that was just in need of a new coat of paint. For us it’s not that simple anymore because the excessive glue usage coats every single centimetre of the floor and it’s stuck on there hard.

The man burnt his hand and my fingers hurt for all the work we did to even get to this point. Tomorrow we’ll slather this floor wih thich ass paint remover and get to scraping. It’ll all be worth it in the end.

No plastic flooring rule. Your Dictatorship is going to be the best. ✅

Has there ever been a proper female dictator?

Hatshepsut? Cleopatra?

People here have plastic lawns! It's hideous. They even have to hose them off with water to clean them. It's beyond stupid. Save us.

The people need me to save them from themselves!

Absolutely!

There's probably a very clever caption/comment here with this plastic covered church...

I can't think of it right now though haha.

Right? It takes time to eliminate plastic but the less you use it the better

I curse the 70s and 80s for their renovation and interior design ”trends”.

I'm totally onboard with the "No plastic floors" law. I think it should be enacted as soon as possible.

My guess is those wood planks will look amazing once they are clean and refinished. They were put in to last 100 years or more... they deserve to be out in the light.

Ah, my loyal subjects. If only everyone would agree so willingly.

Those floors have only been down for about 70 years and it looks like they are actually in great condition all things considoring. I don’t understand why someone chose to hide them with plastic. They could have just put down the non-permanent carpet that they did have on top of the plastic.

What a pity to have this historical wood covered in the shitty plastic... Great initiative. Congrats!

The seventies and eighties were a shit time, people started using massive amounts of plastic flooring and getting rid of old fireplaces and doing stupid shit like that.

You have a lot more patience than I do.

I would likely have rented a floor sander and wasted two or three sheets of sandpaper to just sand off the plastic and the glue. Then a fresh sheet of sandpaper for that nice looking wood.

I guess it all depends on how close you are to somewhere that rents that kind of stuff. If you are slightly North of the middle of nowhere ... you are most likely using the best possible method. :-)

Also, who is the person in the first picture that is wearing socks!!!! You must really hate that plastic floor. ;-)

There is no way you could have sanded throug that carpet, the glue and paint maybe but you’d waste a million sheets of sandpaper.

I had socks on because I just came from work but yes I prefer not to touch plastic floors. Sadly I can’t play ”the floor is lava” in the shower because all the floor is plastic 😭

Shite!!! 😱 I couldn't tell that was carpet. I thought it was linoleum. In that case, retract everything I said (except for the socks part). Nothing to see here. Your approach is perfect!!!

Did I mention that few things are more attractive than a competent, optimistic, ambitious, helpful partner!! 🤗. {who quickly forgives when strangers post uninformed, irrelevant comments?}

Haha no worries 😁 and he isn’t here judging everyones comments, he knows I can hold my own with all you nerds 😝

being a kid, plastic floor where fun, for some reason.
crimes against humanity, though, layering it over wooden plank floors!

This is a cold space regardless, the porch, first entryway, very tradional on old timber frame houses. If we would want it to be a warm space, we’d have to do a whole reno, add double windows etc, which of course is an option we might entertain somewhere in the future. I actually use the porch as an extra fridge/freezer in the winter so I don’t mind at all it being cold 😝
