They say data is the new gold, yet awareness of the importance of data ownership is very low, not only in Malaysia but also in many other countries.
The fact that Facebook continues to do well despite being responsible for a number of data breaches is ample evidence of this indifference of the people.
Evidence such as having the same password or PIN for several accounts, using weak passwords and not using password managers also goes to show the indifference of the people towards data ownership.
As suggested by Prof Morrissey, it is high time for governments to introduce the awareness and importance of data in the school curriculum at the soonest.
