I would have to dig deep as fond memories aren't something that comes to me when i was a child i lived with abusive parents, abusive teacher and a so called best friend who liked to pick on me. So fond memories were very rare.
They could never afford holidays or days out, my father was a miner, my mother a cleaner and i was the middle child of 5, being the middle child i got the blame for everything that went wrong. I learned to look after myself. I started work at 13 working in a Fruit and Veg shop, by the time i reached 15 the owners would leave me to run the shop on my own on a Saturday and gave me hours after school, Having my own money now i could buy things for myself.
When i left school i had to leave this job as got a full time job in the villages local Supermarket, I was on a YTS (Youth Training Scheme). I was on this for 6 months before the company took me on full time. I now had a full time wage of Β£77,00 a week I knew i would have to pay my way for living at home, i had to pay my parents Β£30 a week not leaving me very much but i still saved up for my first ever holiday abroad.
We booked up for Benidorm, me, my older sister and 2 friends. I was so excited, getting away from home for 2 weeks was going to be amazing, then doing what i wanted without getting wrong for breathing was so exciting. I spent a small fortune on new Summer clothes. I intended to let my hair down and have loads of fun.
Here's me 38 years ago.
I learned a lot when i was on this holiday,* i wasn't useless, i could look after myself and people did like me.* This made a big difference to my confidence when i got home. I had so much fun without being told what i should do, how i should act.
Unfortunately i don't have many photos, Only the 4 above. These are enough to remind me of what happened and how much fun i had. I didn't need my parents help or consent.
I have had a few holidays abroad with my husband and 2 daughters, we went back to Benidorm, i wanted to show them where i had been, It had changed so much, the hotel i went to was the biggest hotel there at the time with nothing surrounding it, now its hidden in the middle of so many other hotels.
I still look back on these photos. Definitely one of my fondest memories,
