Why bother with a photographer?

Why pick a photographer?

You wouldn't test a fish on its ability to climb a tree, would you? Well, leave this trouble to someone who takes it upon themselves. The pursuit of the perfect portrait, these few are devoted to the task. Yes, there is an individual who actually wants to take your photo. Put simply, so there's no confusion -- keep your friendly neighborhood black kid in business; you'll get the big picture.

There are a ton out there that want their photo taken by someone that would take a good photo...but I don't think most of them have any clue how to find someone that will actually take a good photo without charging an arm and a leg...or be really creepy.

It's very much a social business, those of weak morals may find themselves mismatched for the profession. Ideally, people all appreciate and recognize the individual as stand-up, go-to specialist. I wonder... what can I do to inspire that in my brand?

I wish that was the case. Models should always take a friend with them and not take private shoots in sketchy places with people they don't trust, unless they can bring a capable friend to back them up. This kinda has to become standard practice, because there are so many stories out there about things that have happened. I've heard nearly the same story with different details told to me by different friends over the years that have modeled. There's a trust and power there that some exploit.

I dunno... There are various things you can do to get like guerrilla marketing, where friends and customers get the word out there, but I'm not sure if it really shows that you are a trustworthy capable person. The best I can come up with is some kind of affiliate or discount setup, where people can either earn discounts on photo shoots and such by referring people, or literally earn a percentage from it, doing social media posts and telling friends about their experience. Then you have people marketing for you, and you work more and more with your biggest advocates.

Of course, running an affiliate program isn't necessarily easy. There are a lot of things you have to consider.

Most photographers suck. Good example wedding pictures

Hah. I like this comment. Do you think this photographer is like most? Or rather, that they suck?

I think most suck. The problem is they do not take the time to wait for that special shot they just make 1000 or more, pick out some great ones and use Photoshop to make it look better.

That is no art to me.
Schoolphotographers are a big disappointment too.

My eldest is a model since years, my son in a law a photographer and one daughter animator plus fixing pictures.

It is not the equipment in the first place that makes a good photographer.

This is seems to be a popular response. Why does it feel like more people default to their devices?

Because photographers are for taking pictures.

This answer was a cop out, I feel, but I'm glad it got received. Any thoughts on this photographer and their body of work?

Jeff, in my time online, I've understood there are people that can do anything.

Hm. I have a big case for a huge paradigm shift in media as we know it. Let me ride the wave at the forefront, for a big splash in this field on the horizon.

You think so? Could I quote your response in written text media?
