There's a Stranger, Knocking at my Door

in #dsound6 years ago (edited)

Some songs are written in a matter of minutes, and for others it may take hours. In this case, however, I guess it took years. I wrote the verses while I was living in Berlin, Germany, but never really performed it much because it always felt like something was missing. Years later, while living in Ohio, I added the chorus, and sang this with my sister Sarah, who took the lead vocals and really made this song special.

This song is about trying to overcome addiction, or something destructive in life. Unfortunately, sometimes addiction can come in unnoticeably, or even allowed in with good intentions, and I think that's what may have happened in this song.

I had the pleasure of working with the multi-talented @aweber on this song, and he recorded and edited it in his home studio. Also, a bunch of friends, including @yumyumseth and @jrue sang back up vocals and really lifted this with a spirit of hope at the end.

Once again, thank you to all of you for such support. I've really enjoyed reading your comments these last couple of days, and meeting folks from all over the world!

Lyrics:

"There's a Stranger"
There's a stranger knocking at my door
A stranger knocking at my door
And I swear I never saw that face before
A stranger knocking at my door

And you told me don't let a stranger in
Oh you told me don't let a stranger in
But I thought he might be a friend
Don't let a stranger in

We've gotta cross that river and love again
Lord knows, lord knows when
When the clouds roll back
We'll be on the other side

All I ever wanted was to get things right
All I ever wanted was to get things right
To settle down and finally sleep at night
Oh to get things right

And for a time there were colors in the sky
For a time there were colors in the sky
And I swear I'd never felt so high
Colors in the sky

We've gotta cross that river and love again
Lord knows, lord knows when
When the clouds roll back
We'll be on the other side

Then the colors died and it all went black
Oh the colors died and it all went black
And If I could, I could I'd take it back
Oh it all went black

We've gotta cross that river and love again
Lord knows, lord knows when
When the clouds roll back
We'll be on the other side

sometimes the best songs are always written in the least amount of time.

Yes this is true. Some of my worst songs were really hard work, and the best ones came easy!

Sweet lyrics... Been re reading them over again for some time now.... Nice song

I'm glad you like them.

Very thoughtful lyrics

Love the sound. Would it be accurate to call this folk music?

The lyrics are great. What is your source of inspiration, do you intend doing music professionally in the future ?

I'd love to play music full-time if possible. Sources of inspiration: mostly other people's lives/stories.

That was good. :D

This is great!!! I love the concept behind the song, compared to the style of music. Its always amazing to me, when a song with such depth can be conveyed in a simple but beautiful way! Keep it up man!

I appreciate it @pocketbookproph! I will try.

Cool poetry here!

Great song, performance and recording. Your lyrics express the insidious reality of addiction well, but in simple, subtle metaphor. That's hard to do.
