Currently what is happening in India is not a new situation for India, this has been happening many times and yet there has not been much of change in certain matters. I am talking about Indian activist Sonam Wangchuk, who is currently on hunger strike to bring some reforms in the education system. In past also he has raised his voice against climate issues in his region and he has a good notable contribution towards the society. He is known for innovation in sustainable education and climate environmental activism in the Himalayas.
Since the past 20 days he has been on an indefinite hunger strike in Delhi, the purpose of which is supporting students protest over the NEET exam paper leak. NEET exam is an entrance test for students who want to pursue medical and healthcare degrees. Recently the NEET exams papers were leaked and that created lot of issues, because there was a re-test done and this impacted many students in different ways. As it is, the study syllabus is not easy and it's a difficult test where students have to put hours and hours of study. Re-examination caused lot of stress for the students and impacting their mental health. There were some students who also committed suicide over this matter as they were not able to handle the pressure. Very sad about this.
Sonam Wangchuk hunger strike is in support of these students. He wants that the Union Education Minister resigns and accept political and moral responsibility for the failures in this system. This is not the first time where an education system has failed, and yet nothing has changed and it continues to put stress on students. His goal is to eliminate the mafias involved in these leaks by bringing transparency in the system. Also, he wants that the government pays financial compensation to the families of those who committed suicide. It's a system failure which has led to such a disaster.
A lot of political people are not supporting him, which is obvious because if they support one cause then there will be more coming up which means it will impact their corruption practices. A lot of good people are also advising him that he breaks the fast because this can cause him his life. Which has happened in the past with other activists. Even the students are asking him to break his fast and take this up in a different way rather than putting his life to risk. I also have the same opinion, because if he loses his life then this whole matter will go silent in a matter of time. Is it really worth it? Rather if he fights the system in a healthy way, possibly, he can bring desired results and changes in the education system.
Right now the whole country is watching how this is going to end and how these political people are going to take any action or not and just watch him die over this matter?
