The tree that gives more than 40 fruits: no God did so well

This American artist wanted to make art with trees, but nature gave him a surprise.

This tree, which looks like an act of magic, is real and was born more like an artistic project than scientific. The «40 Fruit Tree» was created by Sam Van Aken, professor of Art at Syracuse University in new York.

The idea came to mind when he saw branches being grafted into trees other than its origin and growing successfully, "a Frankenstein of nature", as described during an exhibition of the project at TEDX.

The creation of Van Aken can produce up to 40 different fleshy fruits with bone such as peaches, plums, cherries and nectarines. The process is simple: graft buds of a fruit tree on the sides of a rootstock until it is absorbed into the same tree body.

"I see the tree of 40 fruits" as a work of art, a research project and a form of conservation, "said Van Aken in his TEDXManhattan talk of 2014, when he first released his project. And their perception is correct, because not only is it a matter of having many fruits of a single tree, but to introduce varieties of trees/fruits in climates and soils that do not admit such variations.

The first tree was planted in 2011 and in three years managed successful blooms in different times, as the seasons controls are not established.

The trees have already been exposed in various museums as artistic pieces, including the children's Museum of San Jose, in California, already included in its environmental education program; And the best thing is that they adapted historical fruit varieties from the area. And you can also see them in gardens in Kentucky, Arkansas, New Jersey, New York, Maine and Pennsylvania.

Planting these modified trees can be a viable option for the food variety. Also, of course, to function as artistic pieces with which people ask themselves about what they see colors and fruits.
