This is my entry for #wednesdaywalk created by @tattoodjay. This is my second part of my trip to the Grand Postal Building last week. Charoen Krung Road is Thai name for New Road which was the oldest road in Bangkok. So, this area was the first hub or center of commerce, banking and famous foreign companies in Siam almost a hundred years ago. Nowadays, New Road still has it’s charming old neo-colonial style buildings and Chinese shop-houses, famous old hotels and Chinese restaurants. Charoen Krung 30 is a side road next to the Grand Postal Building. This narrow road has seen some improvement as this small district has been developed into a creative and artistic center for new generations of artists and designers. This concept reminded me of the Covent Garden in London. These old shop-houses are about a hundred years old.
This photo was taken by the corner of the Grand Postal Building looking south towards Silom Road where the State Tower could be spotted. There’s a very old camera shop where people could have their films developed and printed at the corner of the side road. The display of old equipments in this shop must be considered antique pieces!
Only a few minutes’ walk along Charoen Krung 30, colourful grafitti could be found along with abandoned old electrical equipment! The contrast between the drive towards artistic endeavor and the old way of dumping rubbish in isolated side road aptly reflected the paradoxical nature of Thai society. I often wonder that our country guardian angels must have been quite exhausted in helping the country muddling through so many severe crisis. I just hope that they still have the energy to see us through future difficulties.
สัปดาห์ก่อนเราไปเดินเล่นแถวตึกไปรษณีย์กลาง ที่ถนนเจริญกรุง เราก็เลยเดินต่อไปตามถนนสายเล็กที่อยู่ข้างไปรษณีย์ กลาง คือถนนเจริญกรุง30 ตรงหัวมุมถนนมีร้านล้างอัดรูปแบบสมัยก่อน ที่มีเครื่องมือวัดแสงและกล้องถ่ายรูปโบราณในร้าน เราก็เก็บรูปไว้ดูเล่น เราถ่ายจากข้างนอกร้านทำให้มีเงาสะท้อนวิวถนนด้านนอก ดูแล้วแปลกตาดี แต่เราสงสัยว่าทำไมร้านนี้ยังอยู่ได้ เราเห็นลูกค้าเดินเข้าร้านหลายคนทีเดียว พอเดิน้ย้าไปในถนนอีกหน่อย เราก็เจอทั้งภาพฝาผนังสมัยใหม่ และกองขยะมันช่างเป็นภาพที่สะท้อนความย้อนแย้งในสังคมไทยได้ดีมาก
The interesting part of this area is Warehouse 30 project which is only five minutes’ walk to the right junction of this road. That day there seemed to be many art students working on a photography assignment; they were loaded with all kinds of cameras and long lenses. Young models were the subjects of outdoor portraits project. I had a good time watching these budding photographers working and quietly competing with each other.
เราต้องเดินเลี้ยวขวาไปตามทางแยก เพราะถนนนี้ตัน วันนั้นเราเจอกลุ่มนักศึกษาด้านศิลปะกลุ่มใหญ่ พวกเขามาทำงานที่ได้รับมอบหมายมาในด้านการถ่ายรูปคน มีคนมาเป็นนางแบบให้ถ่ายรูปหลายคน ช่างภาพสมัครเล่นแต่ละคนแบกกล้องราคาแพงพร้อมเลนซ์ซูมหลายแบบมาพร้อมเป้ใส่กล้อง แต่ละคนพยายามสร้างผลงานอย่างสุดความสามารถ เราดูแล้วพวกเขาแข่วขันกันแบบเงียบๆว่าผลงานของใครจะออกมาดีที่สุด
Warehouse30 is now a well known art district by the Chao Phraya River; with 2,000 square meters of space for art galleries, restaurants and art&craft shops. So, I walked past this alley in front of the red colour warehouse toward the nearest pier for cooling atmosphere by the river.
อากาศร้อนมาก เราเดินตามกลุ่มช่างภาพมาพักใหญ่ พวกเขาพากันถ่ายรูปนางแบบสาวสวยหลายคนที่มาเป็นหุ่นให้ถ่ายภาพ กลุ่มนี้มานั่งพักอยู่แถวย่านแวร์เฮาส์30 ซึ่งเป็นศูนย์กลางด้านการจัดแสดงงานศิลป และร้านอาหารแนวใหม่ ตลอดจนร้านขายงานฝีมือด้านศิลปด้วย เราเดินต่อไปที่ท่านํ้าเพื่อซึมซับบรรยากาศริมน้ำ และความสดชื่นของพลังจากแม่น้ำ
This was the pier where I took the express boat back to Sathorn Pier as I was too exhausted by the heat of the day. The cooling boat trip was very refreshing indeed.

Yup! Too fast and too big without considerate planning for the wholesome well being of the most people. You’ll get lost in Bangkok!
That old camera is a relic, certainly a site you wouldn't see roaming the streets of Phnom Penh in Cambodia. Thanks for sharing @kaminchan.

But aren't people wears mask there? There seems to be many people in the streets, and they aren't wearing masks. In our country, it is against the law to go out without masks. Well, it's for our protection and there seems no wrong with it! 🙃

We are actually quite clear of the virus for over a month now. No local infection, only a few imported by returning Thais from overseas. Very well contained! Actually there’s no need for masks at the moment, but when tourists start coming in, we will have to be on guard again!

Thanks for the tour. I feel a longing to go back so bad it makes me crazy. The first photo reminds me of being in a taxi with my mother driving through the city.

Which town or area do you think you would like to live for the rest of your life in Thailand?! Why?!
I have a soft spot for Bangkok where I was born but I think I need to go to the south. I like the beach haha. It doesn't matter to me. I just feel like Thailand is😊 home.
Aha. The south of Thailand means that you’ll have to put up with a few months of rainy season and occasional flooding, depending on where you actually live.(stay on high ground!)
If tourism comes back in full force, it might be easier to find some temporary jobs. But I see that making a sustainable living will be quite difficult there, unless you stay near to the emergent new communities or city’s expansion project.
I guess I'll cross that bridge if it ever comes.
