Hi Steemians,
Fear and stage fright are common when someone has to appear and speak in public. With good practice, this stage fright can be reduced even though it may not disappear at all. The good news, all speakers, even the world class, still experience this stage fright in varying degrees. So, you are not alone, you are in good company.
According to Tom Antion, author of Wake ‘em Up Presentations, stage fright usually appears before appearing. After someone goes up to the podium, then the stage fright will automatically disappear.
Stage fright can have several signs such as:
- Dry mouth
- The esophagus is like a lump
- Hands sweat
- Hands become cold
- The hands tremble
- Chest beat faster
- The knees vibrate
- And other physical forms
Positive Side of Stage Fright
Aside from the negative side that can cause anxiety and lack of confidence in public, stage fright also has a positive side. You become more attentive to movement and body position. You also focus more on the material to be delivered. Fear is a friend because it makes your reflexes sharper, energy increases, and the eyes become more alert.
So when you feel nervous or anxiety when you want to appear in public, try to relax. Let the nervous feeling perch briefly and slowly flow out so you can take control again. Take advantage of the positive side of nervousness to make your speech or presentation more solid.
How to get rid of nervousness
This nervousness can be overcome by visualizing positive things like:
- Imagine your audience enjoying your speech, they looked enthusiastically, listened intently and applauded.
- Imagine how good you will be.
- Imagine the audience is your friends who are usually invited to chat and joke.
- Remember the happy and beautiful moments that you have ever had before.
The above is a way that can be done when feeling nervous or stage fright hit in the seconds before appearing on stage.
So how can this stage fever be reduced to the right level? The answer is to do thorough preparation. This can be done by:
- Prepare well for all your talk material
Specifically prepare the right opening sentence - Do a rehearsal in front of your friends
- Anticipate difficult questions by estimating these types of questions and answers
- Practice, practice, practice. Do it in front of the glass, when you take a shower, or anywhere you can do it before the day arrives
Make peace with fear
My experience is personal, this stage fever does not disappear even though you have prepared it very carefully. I often prepare for large presentations or public speeches. I feel confident and relaxed with what I will say. I was also prepared with a small note in the form of a mind map or bullet list containing important points from the entire discussion material. But for some reason, a few seconds before appearing, suddenly the stage fever came. The most frequent indicator that I feel is that the chest beats faster and the hands start sweating.
However, by doing good preparation and proper handling, stage fever will not interfere and even make you look better. Don't be afraid or too worried when nervousness strikes because no one dies because of that. Although according to many surveys, people are willing to die rather than having to appear and speak in public J
So, prepare your speech carefully and look confident. Be positive to the audience and they will reciprocate.
