Why I love Star Trek - and my Mom

in #fan-art8 years ago

Hi, my dear Steemit friends and followers!

Since my childhood, I've been a fan of Star Trek. I loved the original series and the Star Trek universe has been accompanying me ever since.

What I find fascinating about it is the whole concept of "we are not alone" - and we can have peace with other races. Compared to other Sci-Fi franchises, it's the philosophy that makes Star Trek unique.

Besides the always exciting adventures of the Enterprise's crews, I loved the unique characters. Captain Kirk, who would never let down people or even whole societies in trouble, McCoy, who would grumble all the time (if not going down on his knees to say "he's dead, Jim"), Scotty, who would fix the completely destroyed Enterprise in no time. Not to mention Spock, so logical and realistic but still human in certain ways.

I adored Data, the android who always wanted to be human, Captain Picard, being idealistic and smart and always finding ways to deal with all kind of problems, I could go on like that for hours.

My mom is also a fan of this universe and since one of her hobbies is stitching, she made the following embroideries for me:

If you take a close look, you will see that some of the letters are stitched using a different color than for the other letters. Taking these letters into account only, my name is highlighted. It was a lovely surprise.

Here's a close-up of the enterprise on the right side of the embroidery:

I've always been a huge fan of the Holodeck in Star Trek's "The Next Generation" series. Wouldn't it just be awesome if something like that existed?

Well, at least I got my own control panel hanging on the wall of my living room:

Here's another close-up:

My mom worked on these embroideries for about one year. If you've ever stitched, you know how time consuming it is and how accurate you have to work.

The instructions are taken out of this book:

You should definitely give it a look if you're into the Star Trek Universe and like stitching. The motifs are extremely funny, flipping through the book will have you laugh out loud.

Last but not least, I want to say "thank you, Mom, you're the best!"

Cheers - or to say it with Spock's words: Live long and prosper!

I agree - Gene Roddenberry had an incredible vision for his universe. It's one that not only lasted the test of time (hurray 50 years!) - it's brought us space shuttles named Enterprise, communicators in the form of cell phones and more recently, replicators in the form of 3D printers.

Like you, what I loved about this world wasn't just aliens and spaceships but the camaraderie - crews working together to overcome incredible odds. While some people have this thing about Star Wars versus Star Trek, they're missing the point. Gene Roddenberry pictured a world where diversity was not only valued but celebrated as a way of bringing us together.

Thank you for your comment - I couldn't agree with you more!

Those are great. So much attention to detail. And who wouldn't want their own Holodeck, but we wont go there! ;)

Honestly, I would go nuts if I tried to do this. I like to knit and crochet but I wouldn't have the patience to do things like these.
And yes, you're right, we'll never get the Holodeck - I've still been dreaming of it since I saw it for the first time... {sigh}

I wouldn't have the patience either. Nor the skill! Thanks for sharing them. A lot of talented people out there.

Thank you!
When you tell people about stitching, they usually think of embroideries with deer in the black forest - I can tell you this is sooooo wrong. What my mom does is just art. I've seen some awesome motifs she made. Very fine art, with pearls and beads and shimmering yarn, they are just stunning.
Maybe I can get pictures of a few of her pieces...

Yes for sure. If you get photos, make another post. I look forward to it.

The Control Panel is very Cool! Love it !

I love it, too. It makes me happy every time I look at it.
