Getting close and personal with the resident butcher bird

This butcher bird is very relaxed and comfortable with human company. He visits daily at the moment for some meat, usually flying onto a chair where he waits quietly and patiently for meat to be thrown at him.

He does not seem at all phased at being in close proximity with me which is probably due to being fed by us as a baby bird. Last year a couple of adult birds with two chicks would fly in for food every day and sometimes a couple of times a day.

I can't be sure it is one the baby chicks because these birds all have the same markings. This one could very well visit a few different homes to be fed. They are very smart!

I can assure you that it is very interesting being eye balled by a butcher bird. They have the reputation in the bird world as aggressive attacking birds. They strong pointy beaks make formidable weapons. One afternoon I saw one in action chasing a little willy wagtail away from our place. The willy wag tails was flying in never came back!

Happy day everyday

Cheers and blessings

Lovely shots of your feathered friend, Angie.

Your butcher bird reminds me of the grackles here. They are territorial and try to drive the other birds away. They even chase the big raven although they are so much smaller.

Isn't that interesting Jo because the butcher bird is relatively small compared to the magpies and crows and he with his butcher bird mates give them curry regularly.

What a cutie he is. It must be fun to have him visit every day. It would be interesting to put a little camera on him to see where all he goes!

Hello @jayna, what a great idea. I do know that he gives the magpies a hard time swooping and snapping at them when they visit for food. I am thinking that this butcher bird wants us for himself, hahaha.

That is a very handsome bird friend that you have there @angiemitchell! Butcher bird is a good name that I should give the nasty (yet pretty) bluejays here. I watched one yesterday kill/fly off with one of the little song birds here. No more peanuts for the bluejays since one swooped down and smacked me in the head and now caught in the act of killing the little birds. I think it may now be safe for me to go out in the yard again after almost a month. I really enjoyed seeing the butcher bird though and I hope they are behaving themselves! 😉 💖

Sorry for my tardy reply @deerjay, you got injured with a bluejay! That is terrible. Hope you are okay. And bluejays attack other birds! Does sound like the butcher birds who by the way do not behave themselves very well at all either. I suppose this is the reality of the animal world which is a bit much for me. Take care 🌸🙏

I'm okay @angiemitchell! I thought it might try something like that so I had a hoodie on..thank goodness but I won't be doling out any more peanuts for them. 😉

That is amazing birds are just so smart and can be so patient and polite i wrote about all these Cockatoos and Parrots that visit my brothers balcony and they just sit there waiting for there cracker biscuits so intriguing watching them just like your butcher bird 😊 👍

Oops, sorry @bigsambucca, (love your name by the way) for not reading your comment until now. Birds are such wonderful fun loving animals. They are so entertaining.

Not a problem @angiemitchell we all get busy hard to keep up sometimes and thanks for the compliment have a great day 😊
