It's all in his head

in #feellast year

As a member of the chronic disease community, how many have been dismissed for making demands that others do not understand or disregard? Noise, light, and certain odors affect the nervous system and sensory processing Common triggers for people with disabilities that affect them. These are things that may not bother most people. But they are bad for us.

When I feel like someone has given up on my needs or is starting to shut me down, that's a personal trigger for me. A peculiar sense of panic and helplessness soon follows. Few things make me feel more instinctively insignificant and helpless than someone doing (I work in therapy).

Some people respond to reasonable requests for regulation as an attack or restriction on their personal liberties. Maybe they think the person is just a boring person. Or maybe they don't realize that minor complaints have a serious impact on the questioner's health. Invisible complaints of discomfort cause discomfort in some people. I think that underlies a lot of these reactions. The inner discomfort caused by these demands can drive the victim to turn away. They may think (or verbalize) things like "it's all in my head" or "probably not so bad."

They don't want to trust their patients completely. It causes dissonance. It would mean inviting scattered facts into their already overburdened heads. Unfortunately, resistance comes at the cost of further isolating the suffering person.
