Some years ago I heard that if you want to get published then do not put your novel up on a blog or writing website. Publishers want that first right to present the novel to the public.
So - to all you successful writers out there - is this true? Is there a danger to posting the story I intend to publish?
I've done some searching on the internet and I'm having difficulty finding the answer to this.
I've been working on an inspiring coming-of-age tale, and I'd like to share what I have on Steemit, but maybe that needs to happen later...."if" I can get it published.

I just published a Kindle book. I was unable to use the KDP Select program because I had serialized the book here first. KDP Select would have allowed me to give the book away for free for a while and thereby gain some word of mouth and some traction on the sales ranks.
it depends on which you are going to prioritize; precence on Steemit, or book sales.
Finally, you may want to ask someone at the publishers about how much of the book can you give away? Perhaps a sample chapter or two?

Check out Lulu.com. They offer self-publishing print-on-demand, and allow lots of different licensing including creative Commons and even custom licenses. I don't think they are picky.
Yes, Lulu.com looks good for self-publishing. I imagine though that it is hard to market a self-published book. the following article mentions, "self-published fiction, however, is very difficult to market."

Yeah, marketing is one of the benefits to having a publisher, even now in the twilight of retail book stores.
The key factor is to have something good enough for a company to sell and make a profit on. Only once you're at that level does marketing becomes important.
I've read your stuff and I like it. However I think it still needs heavy editing before an agent would be interested.
My advice:
Focus on quality, quality quality.
Ignore 95% of the praise you receive on the internet.
Read above and beyond your chosen genre. Read the very best stylists to bring better style to your own writing.
