Charles was from a popular family in the city they were known for selling the best furniture. Mary was also from the popular real estate family; The Gendricks. What the children didnt know was that both families hated each other for bad business relationship between their Grandparents. The bad blood has passed from them to the recent generation. Charles was 22 and Mary was 17 when they started dating, it felt like love made from heaven to them.
Mary didnt care about her education anymore, she was happy to be with Charles all the time. It was during the war and the country was scouting for young boys to join the army. Charless father advised him to stay indoors most times to avoid the Army recruits going around the city. He knew Charles had the physique and the kind of heart for Army but he couldnt risk his only son to go to war. He lost his wife many years ago to cancer and he had become overprotective.
What will happen my love if the recruits get hold of you? What will happen to our love? Mary asked Charles. She had sneaked into his room.
He grabbed her tight and kissed her passionately. Well, I have been careful so dont worry about that. Nothing can stop our love. Are you scared baby? Charles asked.
Yes, I am very scared but I heard my parents discussion this morning. The government have insisted that young married guys are exempted from the recruit.
This gave the two lovebirds a great idea, maybe it is time they got married. As expected, their parents kick against the thought. Marys father screamed so hard during the introduction that he had to visit the hospital that night. Over my dead body will you marry from that greedy family, I forbid you Mary. He insisted with so much rage.
They both cried at the rejection and Charles suggested they elope to Europe if they didnt approve of their relationship. Mary knew how terrible her parents would feel but she was madly in love with her man. They both left notes and eloped to Paris to start a new life together. It wasnt easy but Charles took up some menial jobs to support them both. Six months after, Mary got a mail from Kate. Her dad had died from heart attack and when she thought of traveling to visit her mother, she got another mail. Her mother had sent Kate to her she didnt want to see her ever again, her husband died from thinking so much about her absence.
She cried so much as she read that mail, Charles tried all he could to comfort her. He held her like a baby in his arms and said so many sweet words to her and like a whisper he heard her speak. Marry me today Charles. This is the only way I can continue to live. The next day, they got married in a chapel. Charles did everything possible to make sure it was possible. After the wedding, he took her to a small hotel to celebrate their honeymoon. She finally was happy and forgot her pain. The three days in that hotel were the best days in her life.
