South Koreans love to eat cold noodles in the summer. Of course I also eat in winter. I do not know if there is a cold noodle with such ice around the world. 한국인들은 여름에 차가운 냉면을 먹습니다. 물론 겨울에도 먹지요. 전 세계적으로도 이렇게 얼음이 들어간 차가운 면음식이 있는지 모르겠네요. 오늘은 냉면중에서도 평양냉면에 대해 이야기해볼까 합니다. 왜 서울 사람들은 평양냉면을 먹을까요? 평양은 북한의 수도입니다. 거의 대부분의 한국인들은 평양에 가본적이 없습니다. 남북이 분단된지 벌써 70년이 다되어가니까요. 과연 평양냉면이 평양의 맛인지는 알 도리가 없습니다.
일명 슴슴한 맛으로 표현되는 그 맛은 도시화가 덜 진행된 북한의 어떤 순수한 이미지와 겹쳐져 '맛의 정수'로 재탄생 되었습니다. 사실 그럴만도 한 것이 한국 음식중 이렇게 맛이 약한 음식은 드문편입니다. 된장, 고추장, 간장, 참기름, 고추기름 등 한국음식의 맛을 좌우하는 각종 양념들이 하나도 들어가지 않은 음식이 바로 평양냉면입니다. 평양냉면을 처음 접하는 이들이 하나같이 이야기하는 아무맛도 나지 않는다라는 표현은 어쩌면 당연한지도 모릅니다.
하지만 이 음식음 심각한 중독성을 가지고 있습니다. 일단 먹고나면 입안에 남는 오묘한 맛은 마치 흡연자들이 말하는 담배의 고소함처럼 뇌에 큰 자극으로 남습니다. 물론 여전히 사람들이 '아무맛도 나지 않는 음식을 왜 먹느냐' vs '원래 이맛인데 뭘 기대하냐'로 나누어져 있을 정도로 호불호가 강한 음식입니다. 독특한 한국음식을 경험하고 싶다면 평양냉면에 도전해보길 권합니다.

Actually, that noodle is 'Hamheung' style, and 'Pyongyang' style rarely uses mustard or chilly sauce. Of course I love both.
