Living in the Sonoran Desert provides us with the opportunity to make fresh, home made prickly pear syrup.

  • 12 prickly pears
  • 1 lemon
  • 1.5 cups of sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch (optional)
  • 配料

  • Directions:


    Step 1) Get out there and pick some prickly pears! They are ripe and ready for syrup in August, but be careful of all the thorns. It is best to use tongs and to not get too close the prickly pear.

    Step 2) Remove the thorns. My dad did this with out gloves but he still ended up with a few thorns in his fingers.

    Step 3) Put 5 prickly pears into a blender and puree them. Once that is done strain the liquid through cheese cloth. This may take up to 1 hour.

    Step 4) Squeeze the lemon so you have lemon juice. Add the lemon juice and sugar to the prickly pear puree. Slowly bring to a simmer. Once it is simmering you can add the cornstarch if you want it thicker.

    At this point the syrup is made. If you want you can it and give it away as a gift, but first you have to can it.

    How much sugar did you use and does the prickly pear taste similar to any other fruit????

    1.5 cups of sugar. I don't think the prickly pear taste like anything I can remember. There is so much sugar that it is overpowering.

    I remember doing this back in Phoenix. Those thorns were murder.

    I fell into a prickly pear back in the 7th grade. That experience was terrible.
