5 street foods you should try when you're in Cebu

in #foods3 years ago (edited)

Cebu has a lot of things to offer, from beautiful beaches, waterfalls, churches and many more. However If I were to give you a tour I will not start by giving you options on where to go, but I'll give you options on what to eat.

From traditional Visayan delicacies to Chinese-inspired treats, the “Queen City of the South” is a hodgepodge of street vendors and push-carts offering a multitude of street food that promise to please your palate. Even if you’re not an adventurous eater, Cebu has a street food to quench your gastronomical cravings.

Here are 5 of the scrumptious Street foods you can try while you're in Cebu.

  1. Kwek kwek

quails egg

I'm allergic to eggs but I just really love this one! It's coated with flour and orange food coloring then deep fried. It's partnered with vinegar and a home made sweet sauce. You can also have it with cucumber or a type of seaweed that we call "guso". By the way both cucumber and guso are free 😉

2.Puto Skiwati

*filipino rice cake and hot chocolate *

I would definitely consider this as one of my comfort food. It's a sticky rice cooked with coconut milk and partnered with hot coco with a little bit of muscuvado or dark sugar on top.

3.Pungko Pungko ( ginabot)

Ginabot – the Cebuano version of Manila’s Chicharong Bulaklak – has been a mainstay in the metro’s street food scene, for decades. Tasty, salty and superbly crispy, this crunchy road specialty is an exotic dish made of deep-fried swine intestines, and paired with a flavorful and spicy sauce of vinegar, onions and red chili. Served in pungko-pungko (squat in English) stalls alongside the streets in Cebu, Ginabot is best enjoyed with a few pieces of puso (hanging rice).

4.Shomai

No list of Cebu’s best street food is complete without the inclusion of the well-known comfort food – siomai. Inspired from the traditional Chinese dumpling Shaomai, this sumptuous Dim Sum staple has made its way to Barangay Tisa (the street food epicenter in Cebu), and the rest of the metro’s buzzing streets, making it a favorite street food dish for hungry Pinoys. For a taste of nirvana, drizzle it in Tisa’s trademark sauce of calamansi (calamondin), soy sauce and chili pepper.

5.Mangga and hipon

Looking for an awesome appetizer? Believe me, nothing gets your appetite going than a blend of salty and sour flavors. Green mango, when dipped in bagoong, is a flavorsome experience that will totally awaken your taste buds.

I know there are more than 5 street foods you can get in Cebu but those have to wait until this pandemic ends. So for now let's stay home and wash our hands often. Keep safe Hivers!
