Now that Net Neutrality is history, ISPs are free to try and censor Steemit.com and other projects

This is in my opinion a critical moment in the history of the Internet and related technologies which will in my opinion trigger an evolutionary shift. These evolutionary shifts in my opinion are also moments of opportunity which people can take advantage of to make lots of money. The shift here is that political protection of Internet Freedom has officially failed with the roll-back of Net Neutrality. This now rests on technical activists to come up with technical solutions to maintain Internet Freedom.

  • ISPs are not on the side of Internet Freedom.
  • ISPs have been known to monitor Internet activities and sell this information to advertisers (or perhaps others?).
  • ISPs will be able to slow down access to certain websites such as Steemit.com if politically pressured to do so.
  • ISPs could in theory charge more for access to porn sites, gambling sites, crypto sites or sites like Bitconnect.
  • ISPs ultimately may have the agenda of turning the semi-free Internet we have today where the user is in control of their experience, into a set top CABLE TV style experience where the ISPs provide a list of channels/websites which are available as packages.

In my opinion turning the web into a CABLE TV experience is a nightmare for not just Internet Freedom but for personal happiness, as this level of filtration, constraint, is ultimately putting a lot of control of what we can think about and experience into fewer hands and outside of ourselves. This in my opinion is the main danger long term, and it is a danger of "hostile evolutionary trajectory" which is promoted by ISPs. The solution in my opinion will not be found politically, as political solutions are easily reversed from year to year. The solution(s) in my opinion are technical and economic, and this is because technical solutions are global solutions while political solutions are limited usually to the geographic location, which favors whomever is in control of that little neighborhood, or town, or whomever has political power in that country.

The Internet, the web, and these technologies, may very well be more important to humanity than these artificial boundaries. Can blockchain technology be used to advance Internet Freedom? Will we see ICOs launching to tackle the upcoming suppression and possible tyrannical ISP? If it's about money then are there ways to make Internet Freedom supporting technologies more profitable than censorship and suppression? Is it possible to raise the costs on ISPs who try to do stuff like this while also giving these ISPs competition?

These are all important and critical questions. If all traffic is not equal then what if we don't allow ISPs to distinguish the traffic in the first place by making VPNs the norm?

Great informative post Dana. Truely said that VPNs can indeed fool ISPs and the blockages they put it to curb the flow.

Yeah this was a step back on so many levels, I'm glad a lot of States are already preparing to sue the FCC in retaliation. I was surprised how many family/friends on Facebook had no idea what it even was, after I posted about it many times. So much of the population seems to take a stance of ignorance until it's too late, it's sad. Battleforthenet (https://www.battleforthenet.com/) is a great place for individuals to start at so you can figure out how to show/share your displeasure with what's going on. Let's keep on fighting the good fight.

At the end of the day, I do feel like this will actually be beneficial for the cryptorealm in the long run as it's going to be a large issue for a lot of people and crypto will be the outlet that helps them to get their money out of the current system/powers that be.

BTW have you seen the video where this clown just in your face mocks everyone? P.S. This is the FCC Chairman...sad.

I respect his expression of his free speech and the fact that his video made it to Steem is even better. I hope Steem can be on the side of defending free speech.

Agreed, I can respect the free speech aspect but in the same token a person in his position shouldn't really openly mock the population whilst the actions he's taking are screwing them over.

I don't think, in a million years or my wildest nightmares, would I ever expect to watch something like this in 720p.

Mindblowig post good too see you

That's a great informative post Dana.....

I am on the ISPs side if they are managed under responsible management. Otherwise, i will be against them.
