THE DOLLS (5-minute Freewrite)

The dolls looked down at her from the top shelf of the Christmas display. Twins. She had arrived wanting a single, blonde haired, porcelain doll of her very own. And had left demanding a pair. The twins.
As it turned out, Santa was good to the little girl that year. Despite her threats and tantrums.
In time the dolls aged, and became battered. Care for the twins set aside in favor of care for teenage boys. They sat on the top shelf of her closet. In the dark.
As she reached for the sequined wedding slippers her hand bumped something and two thuds tumbled onto the floor. Twins. She knelt and took the old dolls into her hands. And she wept.
