Meh in my opinion it's dying so battlenet and like any other platform with a dying game is like " we should make it free for a day or two get some peeps up in herrr" but the hype isn't going to last that long. Now giving a free key of COD Black ops 4 would definitely get some attention!

They released a new expansion and I think that's the big reason for it. But they oversold Destiny big time. They said it is a 10+ year franchise with this massive game and storyline. The story ended up being a joke and the could be finished in a weekend. It's fun, but only for the length of the shitty story, then it's just grinding.
Then I guess you're right, it's just for the new expansion
