Lamentablemente, muchos de nuestros jóvenes intelectuales sufren de lo que Jacoby Russell, en su obra The last intellectuals, de 1987, ha descrito como la decadencia del público intelectual. Los intelectuales han estado de espaldas a las expectativas del publico al caer en la super o hiper especialización en sus disciplinas académicas. De ellos se espera que se dirijan exclusivamente a sus pares, y si alguien quiere expresar su punto de vista en algún tópico, se le exige que esté entrenado, en sus estudios académicos, en la disciplina de donde supuestamente surge el tópico en cuestión. El resultado de ello es simplemente un desastre.
Cualquier escrito o intervención oral realizado por alguien, considerado no-especialista, es tratado por los “especialistas” con desdén o menosprecio, se le trata como si fuera de baja calidad y se le critica por no haber tomado en consideración otras aristas del problema señaladas o presupuestas por el especialista. Lo que trae como consecuencia que el no-especialista considera inútil dialogar con aquel que se considera inexpugnable en su torre de Babel. Como resultado de todo esto, las discusiones académicas especializadas se asemejan a discusiones interminables, a la vez que sin ninguna relevancia para la discusión de un público inteligente. En fin, los discursos especializados, por su estilo y sus expectativas, están divorciados de la audiencia no-profesional y casados monogámicamente con sus audiencias de especialistas académicos.
Un conocido filósofo del siglo pasado argumentaba que para ayudar a otros a entender temas aparentemente difíciles y complicados, deberíamos “hablar tan simple y claramente, sin pretensiones, tanto como sea posible, evitando, como si fuera una plaga, la sugerencia de que estamos en posesión de un conocimiento que es tan profundo que no puede expresarse clara y simplemente” K. Popper: El mito del marco común.
Sadly, many of our young intellectuals suffer from what Jacoby Russell, in his 1987 work The Last Intellectuals, has described as the decline of the intellectual public. Intellectuals have turned their backs on public expectations by falling into super or hyper specialization in their academic disciplines. They are expected to address exclusively their peers, and if someone wants to express their point of view on any topic, they are required to be trained, in their academic studies, in the discipline from which the topic in question supposedly arises. The result of this is simply a disaster.
Any written or oral intervention made by someone, considered non-specialist, is treated by the "specialists" with disdain or contempt, it is treated as if it were of low quality and it is criticized for not having taken into account other aspects of the problem indicated or estimated by the specialist. Which brings as a consequence that the non-specialist considers it useless to dialogue with the one who considers himself impregnable in his tower of Babel. As a result of all this, specialized academic discussions resemble endless discussions, while at the same time without any relevance to the discussion of an intelligent public. In short, specialized discourses, due to their style and expectations, are divorced from the non-professional audience and monogamously married to their academic specialist audiences.
A well-known philosopher of the last century argued that to help others understand seemingly difficult and complicated subjects, we should “speak as simply and clearly, unpretentiously, as much as possible, avoiding, like a plague, the suggestion that we are in possession of knowledge that is so deep that it cannot be expressed clearly and simply ”K. Popper: The myth of the common framework.
