[Verse 1]
If I leave here tomorrow
Would you still remember me?
For I must be traveling on, now
'Cause there's too many places I've got to see
[Pre-Chorus]
But if I stay here with you, girl
Things just couldn't be the same
[Chorus]
'Cause I'm as free as a bird now
And this bird you cannot change
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
And the bird you cannot change
And this bird you cannot change
Lord knows, I can't change
[Bridge]
[Verse 2]
Bye, bye, baby, it's been a sweet love, yeah yeah
Though this feeling I can't change
But please don't take it so badly
'Cause Lord knows I'm to blame
[Pre-Chorus]
But, if I stay here with you, girl
Things just couldn't be the same
[Chorus]
'Cause I'm as free as a bird now
And this bird you'll never change
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
And the bird you cannot change
And this bird you cannot change
Lord knows, I can't change
Lord help me, I can't change
[Outro]
Lord, I can't change
Won't you fly high, free bird, yeah
[GUITAR SOLO]

This song began as a ballad without the guitar solos at the end, and Lynyrd Skynyrd recorded it that way for the first time in 1972. Guitarist Allen Collins had been working on the song on and off for the previous two years. At the time of recording, the song was only 7 1/2 minutes long, but throughout the next year, Collins continued to refine the song until it was recorded for the final cut of Pronounced Leh-nerd Skin-nerd in 1973.

Collins wrote the music long before Ronnie Van Zant came up with lyrics for it. Van Zant finally got inspired one night and had Collins and Gary Rossington play it over and over until he wrote the words.

The lyrics are about a man explaining to a girl why he can't settle down and make a commitment. The opening lines, "If I leave here tomorrow, would you still remember me?" were inspired by Allen Collins' girlfriend Kathy, who had asked him this very question during a fight.

Despite having three guitarists, "Free Bird" opens with an organ as the lead instrument, giving the guitars more impact when they arrive. In early versions of the song, this section was done on piano, but Al Kooper convinced the band that organ was the way to go.
“If I leave here tomorrow, would you still remember me?”
The final straw. Once he hears this coming from his woman, he has decided to take the open road in lieu of her. He knows he can’t have both, but he knows now which one he truly wants more. The rest of the song he is consoling her because he still loves her, but he needs the open road and his music more. It’s a bittersweet goodbye. The last half of the last verse, he is walking out the door, into his truck and driving down the road. It is at this point that he realizes what his future holds for him now.

The 5-minute guitar solo reaches peaks and climaxes throughout its course, symbolizing the ups and downs of his tours, as well as his emotions through different patterns and rhythms, eventually fading into silence symbolic of him continuing down this road indefinitely.
This is a part of the song that is actually really progressive from where we started in terms of the journey that we've gone on and this is an important point to bring up about progressions and progressive music because nobody would really class this or certainly wouldn't class Lynyrd Skynyrd as a progressive rock band in terms of being fundamentally that genre but in terms of the journey that we've gone on we have progressed a hell of a lot because not only have we changed in tempo but the whole feel everything's different now where we're having guitar solos and melting phases where we started at such a slow tempo playing in the intro a totally different feel I guarantee you that there's nobody listening to this looking at their watch thinking when is this song going to finish because I'm bought there are so many interesting places that we visit on.

Something that I mentioned all the time about compositions and performances that you want to go on that journey and at the end you want to be at the peak of the mountain and that's certainly what we've got here the evolution of this track from the verse to the end is almost like two separate songs but the way that it's been weaved together and performed is so well executed because you're never questioning the journey we're in a totally different song somehow Lynyrd Skynyrd managed to navigate their way through this song seamlessly so there it is so interesting the whole time and you never question it
