Will This Shit Ever End? Canada's Changing it's Anthem to Make It "Gender Neutral"

So I just learned Canada is tweaking our national anthem to make it more gender neutral. I don't even know what that means really except the line that says, "in all our sons command" will now be, "in all of us command"

To be fair I was never really sure what that line meant? Maybe saying sons and not mentioning daughters was a slight to women I dont know, really who even gives a fuck? Was this keeping people up at night?

Honestly we could use a total reworking or just scrap it and come up with a better version altogether!

I'm super patriotic, I love Canada but 'Oh Canada' just plain sucks. If we're gonna change some of the wording we should have just come up with a whole new anthem in my opinion.

So now our anthem is gender neutral. Neutral means not going forward or back I'd like to just add. Like if you're sitting in neutral in your car you aren't going anywhere right? Yeah our anthem is neutral as a motherfucker 😁

I just found out about this a few minutes ago reading a Global News story. I took the poll to see the results..

Seems the majority of those polled didn't want the change. They didn't ask anyone though they just changed it. I suspect our female Prime Minister had something to do with this, Justine Turdhole. Popular round the world except with the people here in Canada 😝 Seriously she's a moron

Anyways this may seem like a rant but I've already stopped caring. It just seems like we're changing everything we can now just for the sake of change or for fear we maybe upsetting a couple people. Were any Canadian chicks that follow me offended by the old version, let me know in the comments?

Maybe I'll take minute and type out the old anthem incase anyone wasn't up on this spectacular piece of work..

Oh Canada
Our home on Native Land
True patriot love
*In all our sons command
With glowing hearts we see the rise
Our true north strong and free
From far and wide Oh Canada
We stand on guard for thee
God keep our land, glorious and free
Oh Canada we stand on guard for thee
Oh Canada we stand on guard for thee

Ok that's it. Three of the lines are the same for Christ sakes, how uncreative is that? And if we're changing the words now to make ppl feel included what about the non religious or atheists that have to say "God keep our land?" The hell is that shit?

Blah that's enough I'm going to bed now

Thanks for letting me vent,

Sort:

Asks "who gives a fuck" regarding the all our sons command line;
Heads to Steemit to tell everyone how much he cares that it was changed.

Uh yeah

I started off passionate but then lost it about half way thru the post lol

Justin Trudeau bro, looks like you got a great minister too ;)

Her names Justine ok 😝 Don't be so insensitive to her

WTF? LMAO

This is an interesting news since changing anthem to make it gender-neutral is sort of unheard.

Canada, we're always saying sorry. Even if we don't need to..

OMG, you hit the nail on the head (so to speak) there! Great comment!

Canada: Sorry.
Quebec: D'la marde!
Canada: Sorry.
Quebec: Ta yeule, esti.
Canada: Sorry.
Quebec: On bin tabarnak, j'crisse mon camps.

But then Quebec never does crisse its camps from the rest of Canada :p

Thanks for sharing this post..I appreciate story ..Best of luck my dear

I wish you luck too dear

@goldenarms Can this be Sung in the UNISex Bathrooms ??

Not sure, also not sure what bathroom to even use anymore so I usually just do my business in the corner

OH! With my anxiety levels, if I feel unsafe in a public place, I'm just going to ask Frank to enter the bathroom with me and make sure everything is fine and if anyone asks, we just say "It's our right to privacy." Or, "no comment."

The fear I have is that some random dude is going to want to come harass the ladies and ask for proof that I am an actual woman. One fear involves massive panic attacks in front of strangers. Another, well, I fear more for their safety than for mine tbh. Once that rage CPTSD stuff kicks in, if ever I'm in REAL danger, I know I can defend myself.

I know it's elaborate. But those are legit fears that I have, so my solution is to bring my husband with me everywhere I go, including the lady's room.

I could get started on a huge long ass rant here about trying to point out the elephant in the room here. Yes, they make a change that is confusing and baffling but it's just a cover for other things they are doing and stripping away. Like the citizenship, act changes was a good one. :o

I took it to mean "in the commands or our children lies love" or something like that. A better replacement would be "In all our lives command" no?

I never remembered the words anyway. And what are they going to do with the French version of the song? In French, the minute there is one man, even if the majority is female, the masculine takes precedence on the ending of words. So "They" that would comprise only women, would be "elles", add just one man, it becomes "ils". Are they going to start making gender neutral changes there too? I'm all for rights and freedoms, but not when it restricts and controls the freedom of speech of others.

This change in the National Anthem is ridiculous. I respect the LGBTQ community AF, but a National Anthem which was written hundreds of years ago is a piece of heritage.

So okay, they want to change it fine. BUT the MINUTE they start changing the words of SHAKESPEARE's plays... Something written hundreds of years ago should not be altered, unless spoofed, parodied, analysed, anything that enters fair use type of thing.

Whoever wrote the National Anthem should be rolling in his grave going "Where are my Copyright laws? I protest!"

It was written in 1880 in French then 1908 someone translated to english. It didn't become our official Anthem until 1980, when it replaced God save the queen.

As far as making it gender neutral? No ducks given because most of that line gets mumbled anyways, "In all thy..garbled..mand.

If you've ever done a Shakespeare play, you'll know they chop them apart, rewrite lines, throw out overtly racist dated dialogue.

For the performance, but they don't rewrite it and print the newly rewritten versions. That's what I was referring to.

As it should be with the anthem, left to personal preference without a need to rewrite the original script.

Agreed!

Well it is not so much changing it, as changing it BACK. During WW1 the original wording, which was gender neutral was changed to "in all our sons command" .. it was part of motivating the troops.

So, we return to the original although changed to more modern language. I think the original used the word 'dost command' which is really weird English these days.

Yes, this is the world we live in now. We have to change something just because 0.05% of the people want it changed. The minority rule.
It's like some places won't allow kids to go sledding down a hill..... you know why? because someone somewhere fell off their sled and got hurt.... now no one can do it. One person usually ruins it for everyone.

I remember when it was even more repetitive and they changed it from:

Oh Canada
Our home on Native Land
True patriot love
In all our sons command
With glowing hearts we see the rise
Our true north strong and free
We stand on guard Oh Canada
We stand on guard for thee
to "Our true north strong and free"

The song's been changed so many times that it's ridiculous, it's just that this is the first time it's changed since it actually became our national anthem (in 1980). Before that it was "God Save The Queen". Either version is a step up from a monarchist song I guess, though I never really cared that much back then.

Either leave it alone or scrap it and create a new one. Enough about this already. We weren't even consulted in the first place. They will go ahead and do what they want any way...
