Doublestuf aka J34 cruising at sunset

This evening blew my mind!! nice little whale watching cruise around Vancouver Island last year in September. Then I ran into a few members of J pod, which belong to the Southern Resident Orca population, which is currently at 76 individuals. This population of orca are salmon eating orca - primarily Chinook salmon. Due to their low numbers they are considered to be endangered in both Canadian and US waters.

The colours of the sunset were incredible as myself and some of my guests sat back and enjoyed a pure moment with this young male orca & his mum, whom is always close by.

the heartbreaking thing about this photo is the whale himself, a young male whose identity is J34 aka Doublestuf was found dead, washed up on a beach north of Vancouver a few days later. From the necropsy it appeared the he died from blunt force trauma. At the end of the day he was only just coming into his prime and was by far one of my favourite orca of all time to interact with.

You will be forever missed, buddy

Wow, crazy story How were you able to identify the whale in this photo matched the tag of that which was found? It makes it extra sad knowing it was him!

poor whale.

One of my greatest desires is to see a whale so close, you're very lucky :) it's sad that he was found dead :( nice picture and thanks for sharing

Nice shoot picture and good post boy

Nice work boss
Anyway, i just made my introduction post and not many people have read .
Can you check it on my blog please

Rip doublestuf.
If he had 'washed up' on Nigerian waters, he'd be chilling in some people's stomach by now

Fantastic travel

What a beautiful tribute to such a magnificent creature! The colors in this photo are striking, especially in the water. Very nice, thank you for sharing.

nice work boss

What a experience! Thank you for sharing the picture and the experience you've had - and that whale picture :D

Wow! This is an epic shot.

wow superb #golderhourphotography, its grab attention of anyone, so eye catchy and awesome. loved it!

Nice capture of this beautiful creature.

So sorry to hear this beautiful creature is not alive anymore :( but blunt force trauma? What could that be? Did he get hit by a boat or something? I love all animals but cetaceans have a special place in my heart... particularly the Humpbacks, dolphins and orcas...Awesome shot btw, the top spot on the trending page in the goldenhour category is well-deserved ;)

Stunning photo, @thomasjmitchell. What a huge gift! I spent a summer in the San Juan Islands and never once saw an orca. However, this year I did spot a pod of whales migrating off the coast of San Francisco, literally right outside the golden gate bridge! It was a powerful experience, to say the least. Whales hold the magic.

That must have been quite a sight to see.

Such a stunning photo! It really does look like a painting – the colors in rippled reflections – the subtle spray above his blow-hole. • I do hope their numbers begin to climb rather than diminish. What a tragedy it would be to lose such majestically beautiful creatures.

Hello guys nice to meet you all
Dont forget to support and upvote me @suararakyat tq for the place @thomasjmitchell

I am very happy to see people who live the dreams that I still can not fulfill, their initiative to venture into different places in the world, share with majestic animals and most importantly, impart knowledge about it, hopefully this will create awareness and thus preserve the life of these. I congratulate you brother.

Are the colours real? Looks amazing

Your photo of J34 Doublestuf is absolutely stunning. Very heartbreaking that he lost his life.
R.I.P J34 Doublestuf.

Fantastic shot but at the same time emotional. That's nature.

That's really sad. Very nice photo though

What a sad story. What a beautiful photo. Did you know orcas can be taught simple language? I saw a video of one saying hello. Unfortunately, it was in a tank. I'm glad you got this wild one's picture.
