@goodbot's first job

in #goodbot7 years ago

For now, this bot comments on all posts, which are categorized as an # introduceyourself, but the author has used the tag more than once before. It also comments each author only once ( I will maybe change that soon ).

It doesn't flag or threaten anybody.

There isn't a rule on how many times one can use that hashtag.
It's recommended to be used by new accounts:

https://steemit.com/welcome

  • Create your "introduceyourself" post

Please note, how it says post, not posts.
It also doesn't say that you should use it to introduce somebody else.

This obviously isn't a hard rule, but I thought I set this bot up, to remind users, how most of Steemit sees this tag.

A lot of users go to

https://steemit.com/created/introduceyourself

regularly, to welcome new members.

Obviously, these posts get a lot of exposure.

In my opinion it is an attempt to exploit the tag, if one uses it frequently.

Since none of this is a fixed rule, I don't even attempt to enforce it aggressively.

The bot is now up for 3 days and made 190 comments.
I didn't expect that many, when I thought this up.

Some users find it helpful, some users hate it.
That was to be expected.
I now have an idea how anyx must feel.

If you have any suggestions, how I could improve the bot, or how it should operate (or if it should be running at all), please let me know in the comments.

Thx for building that very helpful bot.
Probably most of those reacting angry are those abusing the tag...
Be proud of everybody who is angry with the bot!

The more danger, the more honor.

This bot has it's uses. Flagging down tag abusers is fine. But maybe raise the limit from 2 up to 6 or 8. I posted my story in a weekly series, and it has been very helpful for gaining a following. Having a bot show up was just annoying, considering what I was sharing is easily considered new content by a new Steemian.

That being said, my negative reaction to it was over the top, and I am thankful to @goodbot, and its creator, for having such a mild response to my shennanigans. Steem on! :-) Resteem. And, my apologies, I did not mean to hurt Mr. Goodbots virtual feelings.

I have an improvement to suggest. Perhaps a comment only when someone uses that tag more than once a day. And an automated means for that person to apply for @felixxx to read the actual post and tell the bot to no longer make those comments on this person's profile (if, for example, someone is writing a relevant series that SHOULD use the introduceyourself tag)

inb4 anti spam bot flagging your bots spammy comments.

From my own point of view "a man without principle never draws much interest" I think flagging should be included it will serve as a caution for those abusing the bot. Good work so far @goodbot

Whats the point of that? How making a comment would change anything, they obviously know that they already introduced themselves.

Well ... most of them claim to not know this / reply that their post fits the category ...

https://steemit.com/@goodbot/recent-replies

Some get really angry about how nobody can tell them how to use a certain tag ...

If someone was to flag those repeated tag-abusers, they could check goodbot's comments and flag the posts it commented on ...

If you have a better suggestion, please let me know !

So it is something like the cheetah bot and its pressense makes people flag/not upvote?

It's just a friendly reminder.

If people wanted to use it as an indicator for flag-worthy material ... they could ...

Thank you for being helpful and informative. As I see you have 2 accounts can I ask, if you pay your steem account creation fee yourself. are you allowed to log in 2 accounts from the same ip on steemit?

I created a few accounts last year, when it was still possible with reddit / facebook verification.
(I'm not really proud of it, but hey ...)

You can login into different accounts from the same IP.
All the big accounts have it ( even @dan has @dantheman ), so I thought I'd do the same ...

Please do not pretend that you have the same authority and/or privileges as one of the creators of SteemIt has. His reasons for multiple accounts are definitely NOT similar to your own reasons. Trying to convince everyone that you did it for legitimate purposes is offensive to everyone's intelligence.

goodbot is a good idea.
It should also flag/downvote each case of abuse, and upvote each one of its own comments to help maintain its own positive reputation and steem power.
People whom use introduceyourself obviously abuse it.
I refused to use it once, I got straight to posting original stuff.

What's the purpose of this bot? Does it add value to the community?

Tags and proper use of tags is important. We've seen some users tag their every post as introduceyourself to get more exposure, but as you know, it's making it harder to find real users actually introducing themselves.

Like if I would write a post about cars and tag it as "food". It'd make no sense, right?

So the bot is only tackling one kind possible misuse in tagging.

Well, for the person who creates a bot - and it becomes accepted by the community at large, I'm sure it adds a lot of value to that person - wether we like the bot, or not.

@bi5h0p - IMHO I think bots have a place in a community like this.

Assuming the bot is created with the right intentions, I think they can do a lot to help cultivate the right kind of culture within the community - as long as the incentives incentivize the right type of behavior.

There's a bot called @gentlebot that searches for quality comments and up votes them based on value/quality of the comment - I think bots like this are great when used accordingly.

If there are automations (bots) that can help build the minnow community that provide solid value - why not?

I think some bots are actually necessary to fulfill the role of an administrator in this kind of a platform. However, they must be designed very carefully so as not to produce unintended consequences. And, i think they should be closely watched and regulated. People have been using bots to do all kinds of mean and greedy things on computer networks for many years - it's nothing new. It's just that they have a tendency to "take over" once they are let loose to do their thing. This is not the kind of platform - where you have all types of people - where you want to be chasing out the new users, otherwise it will not survive.

I'd say threshold should be higher, and some extra slack given to brand new people. I also suggest adding to the message a suggestion for anyone below 30 rep or some join date to use a noob tag, we really need a place for all the new people to swarm around supporting each other outside of introduceyourself.
#noob #minnow

I was thinking about lowering the threshold to 1. :D

Creating a noob tag will be abused just as much ... just my prediction ...

I welcome the suggestions though and I will consider them, when I make an update to the bot ( next week )
