WEEK 06: Expanding on my one question response

in #gradnium3 years ago

Many people assert that government regulation is the key to preventing powerful corporate interests from gaining and maintaining monopoly power. However, when regulation occurs at the federal level, corporate lobbyists can easily influence regulations in a way that stifles competition. How can a return to federalism (i.e. empowering the states by limiting the legislative and regulatory power of the federal government) make it more difficult for powerful corporations to exert monopoly power?

In this question, when it states "many people assert that government regulation is the key to preventing powerful corporate interests..." I think that it is very true. I believe that many people, at least in America, feel almost helpless when it comes to challenging the corporations at large. They have a lot of say in what happens, and I think that the people want the government to regulate it because, after all, the government can have that kind of power. If it doesn't start at the government, then where does it start? I mentioned how we have two branches in the government that pass legislation. The house and the senate. In the house, it consists of representatives from each state to discuss legislation, and in the senate, it consists of two state senators that are voices for the state. However, sometimes, the majority of either the house or senate are left leaning or right leaning. Depending on your belief system, you might feel as though you don't have much of a voice when it comes to passing laws that don't align with your values. However, having people from each state, does help with not giving too much power to the corporations. This way, the corporations can't exert monopoly power. Having a monopoly power would not be beneficial to anyone because it allows for one corporation to kind of be in control of all of the goods and services. There would be a lack of variation and quality. Once big corporations have power, they want more power.
