Street Art around Chiang Mai

in #graffiti4 years ago

This all started as a friendly battle between myself and my digi-friend @gabe.radke . Lately we have been trading shots at the street art that exists in the cities that we currently call home and although I have never even met him, it has been a lot of fun so far. If you would like to join in I welcome you to do so.

I'm a big fan of street art but just like Gabe, I absolutely hate vandalism. Even if the work is good I think it is awful if you put some spray on property that is not your own without permission. These pieces are ones that I think it is almost impossible the the artists didn't have permission because it is too good and would have taken entirely too long for no one to notice. Even good street artists take quite a lot of time before their work starts to look great, and therefore someone would have stopped them.

This first one is found in the Northern part inside the moat in the Old Town. Here is the approximate location and a lot of the walls in this alley-oriented neighborhood have pieces on them, most of which appear as though the artists definitely had permission from the owners or the city.

If you zoom in you can see that one of the artists signs his pieces "Mauy" and this same signature can be found all over Chiang Mai. I'd like to meet the guy one day because all of the stuff I have seen by him/her/them are really good IMO.

Speaking of "Mauy", here they are again at least in part, look to the center left of the pic, there the same name is again. This is located on a wall that appears to be getting torn down near a back alley car park near the North East portion inside the moat. I think the wall is going to be there for a while as it appears as though the demolition has been put on hold. It has looked that way the entire time I have been visiting / living in Chiang Mai for the past 2 years. Here is the approximate location

The next one is not nearly as good but that is because it was done by mostly children attending the various schools in Chiang Mai. They definitely had permission to do this because it is on the walls surrounding one of the most heavily guarded buildings in the city: The United States Embassy.

If you even linger here too long someone is going to come by and ask you to move along so yeah, they had permission for sure. here is the location of these

So that aughta do it for now, i'm sending it back at you gabe and anyone else that wishes to participate. On a final note I will leave a bit of vandalism that was absolutely disgraceful and resulted in the temporary imprisonment of some backpackers.

Furlong Lee, a Brit, and Canadian Brittney Schneider were caught defacing a 13th century relic that the city is most well-known for. These two are the scum of the earth and got off easy with a $4000 fine (each) and no jail time. They are also permanently blacklisted from ever entering the Kingdom in the future. Good riddance

Sort:

I haven't seen EITHER of these 2 new ones - clearly been locked down in Mae Rim faaaaar too long!! 😆

yeah you have the upper hand in this battle that is for sure. Those are much better than mine! On another note i remember hearing about those two jerks that sprayed on that wall. I am amazed they didn't punish them more severely.

i would be willing to bet that there was some negotiation behind the scenes with embassies.

those two idiots at the bottom that made international news. I hope the shame followed them back to their home countries. The legit art that you posted is top notch. Do you know the artists? I bet they have a great backstory.

That top one cracks me up. It almost looks like an evil sci-fi villain but friendly in a way. Nice colors too. My city punished graffiti harshly, so we don't really have any. I do appreciate it though!

well i think that unauthorized graffiti should be punished. Mostly because most of it is terrible and even if it isn't terrible, it isn't your property and that is just wrong.

oh, maybe that's what it is. I watched a few episodes of that on Netflix a few months back because someone here recommended it. It wasn't really for me though.
