Gridcoin Community Hangout #027

A massive shout out to the BeyondBitcoin community & @officialfuzzy for providing the Gridcoin community a room in their mumble server for free.

Another massive thanks to @peppernrino for editing the hangout recordings! Follow him on Steem! :D

What is Gridcoin?

Gridcoin securely rewards BOINC computation on top of Proof of Stake. Reward allocation is distributed, not centralized unlike other distributed computing related cryptocurrencies.

Episode guide

Why are we holding these hangouts?

  • A mumble conference call can provide significant advantages over communicating via forums and IRC.
  • To create opportunities to inform the public of new Gridcoin, BOINC and related services & their development progress.
  • To bridge relations between the cryptocurrency & BOINC communities.

How long will the hangout last?

If there are not many topics suggested then hangouts won't last longer than an hour, on the other hand if there are many topics suggested then the hangout may last 2-3 hours!

When the Gridcoin Community Hangouts start really picking up traction we can become more strict with allocated speaking time if need be (so you're not waiting hours to talk).

Want to suggest a topic to discuss?

Reply with your suggestions in this Steem post & order of discussion will be from highest to lowest voted suggestions.

Can we discuss anything?

It's advisable to stay generally on topic, attendees are distributed around the world so they may not (likely won't) share the same views regarding controversial topics not related to Gridcoin/BOINC/Cryptocurrency.

That said, this 'on topic' guideline fizzles away once official recording has ended & the hangout becomes a more relaxed environment.

Steemit 1 year anniversary!

Shapeshift has added now Golem, which do NOT have a working product, but still refuse to add Gridcoin, which IS WORKING.

see make Shapeshift accept GRC

It'd be great if they would publish a minimum requirements for integration to shapeshift, the 'discovery list' responses are vague and the 'no new coins in 2017' has proven dishonest.

if have kept having these questions about gridcoin. i keep my pc on with world ibm grid community, the one that contributes to find cure for health ailments but i would think i am gathering some gridcoin for doing that. i don't know how to do mining, so was looking for really easy way then so that. i see that i have gather points on the platform but what are those points? are they convertible to gridcoin. does it mean i may have some gridcoin somewhere?

You have e.g. credits and RAC in the BOINC projects (here WCG). RAC (recent average credit) is used by Gridcoin to determine how much reward you get. You can find a tutorial how to set up Gridcoin and its requirements on gridcoin.us

thank you alot, i will check! so how you mean is essence is that my points are convertible to actual gridcoin? how about the credits i have racked up before setting up gridcoin are those lost?

rephrase your 1st question, I don't understand what you mean

credits before: normally, Gridcoin "remembers" done BOINC work for the past ca. 6 months. I think this should also work for your case

Your average (current) RAC is rewarded, historical computation is not rewarded unfortunately.

i wish i understood it well . Do you mean like all the pc donation done before i set up the grid coin setup will not count?

Older (3+months) computation will not count, what counts is your current average RAC you're contribution (which does take a few weeks to build up).

Any more frequent, observed user problems ?

problems?

March 23: many users are experiencing syncing problems with the blockchain. why ?

Most likely this is rippling issues from the bad superblock the other day - several users will have been rewarded far greater than they are actually owed thus their blocks are being rejected.

March 20: What has caused the magnitude zero problem ?

A poorly formed superblock was staked which threw off the neural network magnitude calculations.

Several users within the community have begun investigating why this was the case, attempting to recreate the neuralhash popularity mechanism manually.

More users actively staking would help prevent these kind of issues.

I am trying to translate the Interview with Travis Desell from Citizen Science Grid into German. Would be really cool if somebody would help me or correct my translation, if it's faulty.

thats the link to the interview on YouTube.

the most liked + commented threads about Gridcoin, in last weeks:

  • on reddit
  • on steemit (see comment, in above link)

Willy de Zutter from BOINCstats has responded to my e-mails and is willing to carry our banner again, but the price is now 550 euros. Quite expensive, but it could be worthwhile (it's been almost a year since our last fixed campaign on BOINCstats).

Should we vote on the current expense for Gridcoin Hangouts, despite the glitch ("Sorry, this expense does not exist" when View is selected via right-click menu)? Or a new vote will be created?

I think we should not make new polls until we are sure all/most users are/were able to vote

I could try resubmitting the expense? I think it might be due to special characters? We could use the normal voting mechanism to draw attention to it?

It would help maintain effort that goes into these hangouts.

There's a real possibility that another vote would also be glitched, creating more confusion. So, perhaps it's best to go ahead with current vote and be done with it. But I guess it'll need some 'promotion', only 2 votes so far, it was kinda overshadowed by the recent issues & fork.

I agree that hangouts effort deserves this incentive. I am voting in favor.

I doubt that even with promotion that people will vote on a glitched out poll :/

We should ditch all these extra fields, relying solely on the non-foundation voting mechanism & hold all the foundation fields on the related URL page.. meh

All my Foundation votes were glitched from the very beginning. Never managed to track down the problem. But people voted nevertheless (although in lower numbers than for non-glitched votes).

I completely agree that there is no need for extra fields in Foundation votes, nor for a separate Foundation voting mechanism in general. Less is often more, proved yet again.

The poll system could need another field for a longer description. Trying to keep it all in the title is to difficult sometimes. There we could post all the information required for additional expenses polls for example. The field could be limited to around 250 characters. Longer explanations should be linked to.
