Essential oils have long been used throughout history for their medicinal properties to treat many forms of medical ailments. Whilst maintaining its original pharmacological uses, todays essential oils have also been found to prove useful for other reasons, such as pesticides and beauty products.

The oil extracted from the seed from the Anise plant, Pimpinella anisum, possess quite a few benefits of which I'm sure you will find useful, the first of which is as a muscle relaxant.

Anise can help to relax smooth muscle tissue which helps relieve the discomfort of intestinal, menstrual, and muscular cramps.

Another use for it's smooth muscle relaxant properties is the effect it has on the respiratory tracts. It helps to relax and open the airways and acts as a bronchodilator, allowing for better breathing, particularly when afflicted with a cough or a cold.

Anti-inflammatory

Regarded as having the same anti-inflammatory effects as indomethacin, a prescription drug, Aniseed oil may help to relieve any discomfort associated with pain, headaches, artheritis and general swelling

Antibacterial

Aniseed essential oil had shown to have antibacterial powers against many common forms of multi-drug resistant bacteria, including Candida albicans and Salmonella typhimurium.

Antifungal

Aside from Oregano, Aniseed is one of the best essential oils to use in the the fight against fungus.

Antiparasitic

It kills lice - YAY! A study of school children in Jerusalem was conducted where the participants were treated with either a natural mixture containing Aniseed oil, or another formula containing Permethrin as a control agent. The results: Just as many children were successfully treated using the natural Aniseed formula, as much as the children who were successfull by using the control formula.
