Oura Ring 3 Month Update

When I first posted about investing into my health by getting the biohacker favourite Oura ring, quite a few of you were curious about it too and wanted an update on it. I’ve now had it for full 3 months so I have a pretty good idea on what it’s capable of and whether I think it was worth the coin.

I’ve only taken the ring off when I shower or do something that might harm the ring, and of course to charge it, that in itself tells you how much I enjoy it.

I don’t need a ring to tell me if I slept well or like shit, but I like having a record of it and seeing how different things effect my sleep, temperature and resting heart rate.

For example on the chart below, there is an odd spike on the temperature chart, that I know is from getting drunk the previous evening.

The wave like temperature pattern is normal and healthy because I’m a woman in reproductive age, and actually it was one of the main reasons for me to get the ring. I find it important and interesting to know more about the menstrual cycle because it pretty much has an effect on the whole body. I was sceptical about a simple ring being able to detect variation in the nightly temperature but I’m super super impressed with it after testing it agains a thermometer for over a month.

My second favourite feature is tracking daily movement. The Oura ring IS NOT a fitness tracker by any means, but it is good at detecting basic movement. It won’t know how heavy you lift or how high your heart rate is while you work out, but it will notice when you move around. Since I’m no fitness person, the Oura ring is just enough for my needs. It kicks my ass when I see there is hardly any movement for a half a day, and makes me feel good when I see consistensy in the chart. Though I would definitely not mind if somewhere in the future the ring could detect heart rate on demand, and even have a pulse oximeter, I know I’m not the only one who’d like more geeky data.

The Oura ring is expensive but for me, it’s proven to be well worth it. If you are considering getting it, do a lot of research beforehand to see if it fills your particular needs.

Ps. I know @cwow2 happened to buy the ring at the same time as me, so maybe he’ll pop by in the comments and tell us what he (yes I’m assuming genders) thinks of the ring now.

Damn! Your chart is pretty stable xD
Mine looks like this often

I agree with all you said. Its a neat little ring for tracking sleep and steps aswell!

For anyone thinking about buying this ring, DO NOT use it if you lift heavy it will sratch your ring.

also, if you take a nap and update your ring, you can add the nap to your sleeping score :p

Omg, your sleep really is SHIT! Are you hella stressed or what?

WHaaaaat? You call THAT a shit sleep?? xD
I look at both of your charts and think - you lucky bastards! - with my max 30mins of deep sleep, and that's on the good nights.. :D

Total jelly over here.. xD

Holy shit xD Do you have Oura aswell?? :D

I will ask the same question as Eve did, are you insanely stressed or what?! xD

:D nah, I have a smartwatch.

I am not insanely stressed... as far as I know, or maybe I've just adapted to insane stress levels as my baseline. xD

Sleep is reasonably ok for my standards at the moment. It was WAAAAAY worse when I was working as a cabin crew. Shifting from lates to earlies was an absolute nightmare. I'd wake up with an adrenaline rush throughout the night. At one point it got so bad that I started to manually mark down how many times I've jumped up.. if I remember correctly one night I marked about 20-30 times.

Sensory overload is a thing for me as well. So heavy blankets are the only way to fall asleep at all.. since childhood. Can't fall asleep without socks either, as feet against feet can be too much stimulus. Although I did use to stim feet against feet to fall asleep as a kid, so go figure.. :D

I could experiment a bit and see if anything helps. Step off of the coffee maybe. See if it helps at all.

There have only been two times that surprised me when I literally went out like a light-bulb. Both were after a long sauna session with a lot of contrast. Could try some more of that and see if it helps too..

But yeah, as I see it's a rather constant pattern for me now - those roughly 30mins of deep sleep at the beginning of the night and then some light sleep and tossing and turning..

Yo wtf, thats insane xD

Shifting from lates to earlies was an absolute nightmare

I had this shifts when I was working a 7-11 x) I hated it so much.

Sensory overload

It quite interesting for someone who doesn't have it xD Or interesting topic at least :D

Step off of the coffee maybe.

Its helping me! Also not eating 2 hours before sleep can help aswell.

If you love saunas you just have to move to Finland :P Eve can vouch for that :P

30min deep sleep is shit hot damn xD

xD I'm from Latvia, we have saunas here too.. :D
Eating 2 hours before sleep is not the issue here, I'm not a late eater. I don't stay on my phone before sleep either and take good care to go to sleep early. If I was reckless with my sleep patterns as some people, I'd be a zombie in no time! :D

Had some random mornings I've woken up feeling really sleepy without any apparent reason, check my phone, and yup 2-3 minutes of deep sleep, welp, yup, that'll do it, that would explain why I feel so atypically sleepy.. xD

Well, the logical place to start the experiments would be no coffee then..

!LUV ^^
Thanks for listening to my sleep rants.. xD
It's nice to share and compare experiences from time to time. :D

Ye, this is quite normally for me xD

My sleep have always been shit, I have even gotten a good "hard" topmadras + a weightblanket and quit all caffeine. So what you see there is an improvement of what it can be haha.

I don't feel stress at all, but I might be xD

Ohh, you slso dont have to take it off when showing. Its water proof down to 6 meter, I a recall correctly :D

Oh I know, I have gone swimming with it, but I don’t think I need it in the shower 😂😅

Ah okay, well true haha xD

Very cool. I like wearing my android watch for similar reasons. It does very similar sleep tracking, but I think better on the steps and heartrate tracking. This looks very convenient! How long does it work before recharging? Daily charge needed, or do you get a few?

Around 5-6 days before you have to recharge it and I have it on all the time.

This is super cool! I recently got a smart watch and use it to track my life – it's pretty cool to see graphs of my daily movements etc.

But what I wanted to ask was do you also get "average" sleep times? I see you've included a graph of one night's sleep, but do you also have the knowledge of how well you sleep overall (awake, REM times etc)?
