My Sugar Experiment

Maybe you read my post from yesterday where I was talking about addictions and how to get over them, but I haven’t told you what I’m addicted to. Well, I’m addicted to sugar, it started in my childhood when I used to receive sweets after dinner and that habit stick to me since then.

It may sound unbelievable to some but yes, sugar is addictive, and everybody is on it. When you get some sugar, your brain reacts to it in a certain way, releasing dopamine that makes you feel good but it’s only an illusion. If you haven’t eaten sugar for a while, the withdrawal symptoms will start to kick in, making you want to eat some.

I’ve done a little experiment in September, for one week I didn’t eat any sugar, and in the beginning, it was hard as fuck, but with time it got easier even if the withdrawal symptoms were pretty hard. And I only eat some sugar now and then, imagine how hard is it to get over something like this if you’re eating a lot of sugar.

The problem with it

You see, sugar seems innocent because everybody has some now and then, but it’s far from being that way. I’m seeing kids loading themselves up with sugar like crazy, and it is hazardous because those little guys will probably get diabetes or at best obesity.

Sugar acts like cocaine because it releases dopamine and since it’s so addictive some food producers are even filling up their foods with sugar, so it gets at that sweet spot, and it has a powerful effect. If you want to know more about this, I urge you to watch That Sugar Film.

I'm not in the situation that sugar is destroying my life, making me unable to function properly, I'm on good terms with it for the most part, but lately, I feel like I had too much of it. The thing is that my body doesn't need sugar but still, sometimes the cravings seem pretty powerful and since I understand that I'm not just my body and I don't want to be controlled by a substance I decided to quit sugar.

In September, I was sugar-free for about one week, but then it was @buzlealex ’s birthday, and we bought him some cake, and since I paid for it of course that I ate some but soon after that I started eating sugar again.

Taking up the challenge

Maybe most of the times you hear me talking about commitment, fucking exceptions and getting shit done but besides my Steem success, I haven’t shared any challenges from my personal life with you. Anyone can just talk about stuff, without accomplishing anything but I’m not like that.

I am a firm believer that leading by example is the best way to teach people, so I’m going to take up the challenge, I’m going to quit sugar once again. Everything’s going to be documented on the blockchain, and I will be honest about the process. If I fail, I fail, but I would not dare lie to you about what’s going on.

This is only the beginning because I’m going to take up another challenge soon, I will make a post about the progress and how I feel sometime next week.

For how long I’m going to quit sugar? First I want to note that sugar is in everything and it’s going to be hard to cut it all out but I will not eat any sweets or stuff that I know is filled with sugar. I even cut sugar out of my coffee and tea today.

I’m not going to eat sugar for one month starting from today. Not tomorrow, today, so that would be until 25th of February. Tomorrow I’m going to be posting about a different type of addiction that most are not even aware of so make sure to stick around.

ok buddy... I´m with ya... callenge accepted. Am quittung sugar from right now for a week... and believe you me I´m using sugar as an add-on a lot... damn, that gonna be a challenge :) .... hardest thing will be to quit givin sugar in my coffee....

I'm happy to hear that you're in too, I wasn't expecting other people to join, it's really awesome. You should post about it. I realized that some types of coffee taste good without sugar too, try to add some milk. ;)

Good luck, we will need it, lol.

defo bro... already given me a bloody hard time today... almost forgot about it this morning when sleepwalking to the coffee machine :)

Let’s doooo it! I’m in too! Quit coffee too!! Ahhhhhh!

This is really interesting! I had the same situation you were mentioning. Before Christmas I was really paying attention to what I am eating and also about what contains sugar! So I didn't eat sweets at all. But on Christmas day everything started again. I ate one piece of chocolate and since then I can't really stop eating this shit -.- Have to take all my strength together to stop eating so many sweets again! But it is so hard especially when we have visitors and they always bring something sweet as a gift ...

I also noticed the same thing that children really eat a lot of sweet stuff these days. I remember when I was little my mother nearly never allowed me to eat sweets and I think this was better like that. Because later it will be really hard for these children to get away from sugar!

Already waiting for your documentation! This will be really interesting and hopefully you will succeed! Maybe I should also start to quit the sugar entirely. Also I am curious what kind of antoher addiction you mean!

Dang! I know what you mean, after Christmas everything went insane. Everyone I was at had something sweet at home prepared plus that I had two birthdays and a new year's so I ate so much cake, lol. I just feel like I'm not balanced anymore after that, I used to eat healthier.

My mother didn't really give me that many sodas when I was a kid, so that taught me not to drink them too often, so I'm not addicted to them right now, at all. Sadly, so many adults are addicted to these shits; it's crazy since they have no idea what they are doing to their bodies.

Now that you mentioned, you have to quit sugar. Make a post about it and take up the challenge, @spirits4you joined too, let's spread the word on Steem. :D

Yeah I think I will join you and make a post about it tomorrow right after work! It is a great idea and more people should try it!!! The more the better :D

Sounds awesome. I say, wait a few more days, I'll make a post about it, so you know what tag to use. ;)

Alright I will wait ;)

Thanks, @guyfawkes4-20, great post. I gave up sugar over 15 years ago. Not completely, but I do not use processed sugar, I gave up all candy, chocolate, cakes, bread and pretty much anything with added sugar. This includes artificial sweeteners since they are, by far, worse than sugar.

It makes a huge difference in the quality of your life. I am lighter, healthier and generally have no food cravings. I also drink beer (that I brew) without any worry of gaining weight or a belly.

I suggest to anyone, give up sugar if you can your life will improve drastically.

I'm glad to hear that man; I know all those foods filled with sugar are cancer so on a psychological level it wouldn't be hard for me to quit it. So far, so good, I have some fruits around the house, so those help a lot.

I'm curious to see where this challenge will take me.

Btw, I had no idea you're GoHawks on SPL; your username always stole my attention because it seems so similar to mine, GuyFawkes. :D

Come to think of it you really didn't mention what you were addicted to yesterday. Wow, guess I was too carried away by the quality of the prose to notice.

it may sound unbelievable to some but yes, sugar is addictive, and everybody is on it.

I am too. Though not really addicted, cos I don't take it often, but what i lack in frequency I more than make up for in volume: the few times I eat it i do it voraciously.

I'm really glad you're willing to share your journey with us; can't wait to go on it with you. Like you said, it's going to be hard, but we have faith in you, and in a way we're going to be there with you all the way. Wish you all luck!

Haha, I supposed it worked then, lol. Yup, the best part about documenting this whole journey is that I have a more significant commitment now than I would've had if I were on my own. I appreciate that, thank you. :)

Good luck getting rid of your addiction, if you really focus on overcoming it you will certainly be able to stop craving sugar. But be prepared for some hard days if you really take this challenge.

Stopping addictions are never easy, and I bet you know this. But with proper discipline anyone can do this.

I will be looking forward to your next post man!

Cheers!

It will sure as hell not be easy, but I will give out my best. It should be easier since for the most part, I am working, so there's not so much time for me to think about sugar. Thanks, you should join this challenge too. ;)

Sugar is more addicting than Cocaine! Makes us much dumber also. I never really have a sweet tooth but when I do have some, I need more and more...it is crazy. Sugar is terrible and should be avoided at all costs!! Great post @guyfawkes4-20!!

Feel that, it is crazy indeed. I think it will turn out great, in the end, I really want to try my limits, see what happens if I'm sugar-free for one month. :D

Yea that is how you change for sure. When you dip your toe in and find out, this feels amazing, why didn't I come here before! :)

Good for you! I try to avoid sugar and eat as healthy as I can but I don't have the determination to quit sugar yet.
Maybe after a month it will become a lifestyle for you...

Eating healthy is always good, but sometimes it is hard, but it does worth it. To be honest, that's what I'm hoping, that it will become a habit, a muscle and I'll take this even further, but we'll see about that. :)

This such an awesome post! I did the same experiment twice last year and probably I should quit for good! cheers @guyfawkes4-20

You should quit it again, join the challenge, see what happens; maybe we spread the word on Steem. :)

I will join in this, from 27.01-27.02 I won't eat sugar
But we should set some boundaries
Are fruits allowed? Greek yoghurt? Peanut butter? All have sugar unfortunately
Btw we could replace the sugar with stevia
I am a big fan of sweets, but I can do that! Cheers @guyfawkes4-20!

I'm glad to hear you're in. Fruits are allowed, they contain sugar but other things within them neutralize it, fruits are made perfect. Anything else that has added sugar should be cut. I mean, at least the sweets and things that are sure to have sugar.

I'll make an update on this sometime next week. ;)

Moderation is what I believe in. If I deprive myself of sugar, I will crave more.

Moderation is always good but, you can't moderate the usage of cocaine, for example, you have to cut it all, I think it's pretty much the same with sugar too. :)
