Paracentesis or as known the abdominal tap is a procedure done when there is an excessive accumulation of fluids (Ascites) inside the abdominal cavity.
The ascites may lead to difficulties in breathing and pain in the abominal region.
There are alot of cases that lead to ascites :
- liver cirrhosis (most common)
- cancer
- kidney disorders
- Congestive heart failure
- Infections
- pancreatitis
- tuberculosis
The Procedure of Paracentesis:
The patient should not eat or drink anything for 12 hours before the operation is done .
The abdominal area should be shaved and cleaned, and a local anesthesia is done, after that the doctor inserts the needle tap 2-3 inches bellow the umbilicus, and let it go 1-2 inches deep, then the excessive fluid will be extracted using a syringe.

- Decrease in blood pressure
- Infections
- Kidney injury
