Smell detector - Eh? Now, what's that, you might be thinking.
When we had covid, this was what helped us realize that we also had contracted the virus.
The bitter lemon tree - well, that's what it is. The giant bitter lemon. Unfortunately, it cannot be used for juices or other drinks and such but only as a form of pickles which is actually very delicious and also healthy.
How is it a covid detector?
The leaves of this mini tree can be torn and smelled and you can smell the tanginess of the lemon. It is very strong indeed.
So, when my husband felt uneasy, he went to the tree and tore a leaf and then smelled it and lo, there was no smell at all after which we also tried and we couldn't smell. Then we bought self-test kits and the leaf proved right that we had the Omicron version. The strong smell is also good to induce a great sense of aroma therapy.
Now for the uses of this tree.
It is around fifteen years and now only, we got a fruit. The lemon tree is very queer in that matter. I hope we get more.
The leaves should be plucked and wiped clean with a cloth. It should then be powdered dry along with some salt, tamarind, dried chili, and other spices and a bit of lime juice should be added and balls can be made and stored in an airtight container to be used as a pickle. It is very good for eating especially if you have no appetite.
The fruit can be plucked when it changes color from dark green to slight yellow and sliced and pickled along with salt and green chilies. This pickle is usually served with curd rice and on festive occasions for the 'sadya' meal. This pickle is also good for people who suffer from gas problems. Sometimes, the red chilly powder is also added to enhance the taste.
Many people may not be aware that the lemon family has so many varieties. The one I mentioned above is used by many but it is rare because it is not seen very much and also it takes years to fruitify.
I hope you understand the need for growing your own greens. One day or another, you will be able to enjoy the fruits of your labor. Also, you can be assured that you are consuming organic produce that you yourself have grown.
Some people may point out that they are not permanent residents but if you are kind enough to plant seeds, it can be good not only for the environment but also provide for future generations. Be it a fruit, herb, shade tree, or vegetable. It is all good.
You will be surprised if you do not already know about the seed banks and local farmers who grow organic vegetables and either sell or donate or barter stuff.

Never heard of it before, but it sounds helpful. Having fruit trees and growing your own vegetable is really is sure great. We've been practicing that for generations. And I'm thanking my ancestors for starting it, we're still reaping the fruits they've planted.
