Czech Republic commemorating the 73 anniversary of the Prague Uprising

in #history6 years ago

Hi everyone,

Today is an important day in my homeland, the Czech Republic, so I decided to provide you with another little insight into our history.

Exactly 73 years ago, on May 5, 1945, an attempt by the Czech Resistance to liberate Prague from Nazi German occupation known as the Prague Uprising started.

The uprising lasted four days - from to May 5 to May 8 - and it resulted in a ceasefire between the Czech Resistance fighters and the Nazi German army that withdrew from the Czech capital.

The Prague Uprising was triggered by a broadcast from the Czech Radio that was publicly asking for help from the Czech Resistance military group but also from common people to protect the radio from the Nazi German army. Within hours, some 30,000 Czech fighters answered the call, overwhelming the German soldiers. Another 100,000 Czech people helped with building barricades, caring the for the injured etc.

However, the German staged a massive counter-attack, resulting in fierce street fights with thousands of casualties, mostly on the Czech side. The uprising came to an end officially when the Soviet Red Army entered Prague to liberate it.

This memorable event is considered one of the greatest examples of the courage and patriotism of the Czech nation.

If they just sit there and do nothing at all, it will only worsen their own struggle from the Nazis tyranny. So they made the right decision to resist and fight for their own country and for the future of Prague. Now we can tell and appreciates their sacrifices they did, only if they know that Czech Republic nowadays is one of the successful country in the world..

That is definitely a piece of history worth remembering and celebrating. Those were some brave soldiers. This reminds me of the Memorial of the Second Resistance Movement. While this monument commemorates the entire resistance from 1938-1945 rather than the specific Prague Uprising, it feels like an appropriate photo to post here. I was entirely captivated by this monument even before I knew the history behind it. And after reading the history, I'd consider it one of the most important monuments in the city.

Interesting. Didn't remember that event & had to read up on it. That lead me to Wikipedia.

"The uprising came to an end officially when the Soviet Red Army entered Prague to liberate it."
Acc. to Wikipedia, the uprising ended with a ceasefire (officially German capitulation) on 8 May. The Germans "capitulated" because the agreement allowed them to escape to the West, so that they could surrender to the US-Americans.
So, when the Soviets arrived in Prague on 9 May there was not much left to liberate & only some scattered German units left to fight.
