The spread of Islam in the archipelago is the process of spreading Islam in Nusantara (now Indonesia). Islam was brought to the archipelago by merchants from Gujarat, India during the 11th century, although Muslims had been to the archipelago before. By the end of the 16th century, Islam had surpassed the number of Hindus and Buddhists as the dominant religion of the Javanese and Sumatran peoples. Bali retained a Hindu majority, while the eastern islands remained largely animist until the 17th and 18th centuries when Christianity became dominant in the area.

Despite being one of the most significant developments in the history of Indonesia, the historical evidence of this episode is stale and generally uninformative so that the understanding of the coming of Islam into Indonesia is very limited. There is a debate among researchers about what conclusions can be drawn about the conversion of the Nusantara community at that time.

At first historians believed that Islam spread in the Indonesian archipelago in a generally peaceful way, and from the 14th century until the end of the nineteenth century the archipelago saw almost no organized Muslim missionary activity.
