5 Lost Treasures You Can Still Find

in #history7 years ago (edited)

There is something intriguing to me about history and all the events that have come before us. One of the most interesting aspects of history is you can find it in physical form.. In this case, in the form of buried treasure! (really). Here is a list of 5 lost treasures that are believed to be still out there today.

1- BlackBeard's Treasure:

Blackbeard is a well known 18th century figure in history who is said to have accumulated a massive fortune (about $120 million) throughout his years of being a pirate. It is believed his fortune is still out there, even after archaeologists discovered his ship "Queen Anne's Revenge" back in 1996. His ship was discovered near the coast of North- Carolina... maybe a good place to start diving?

2- Dutch Shultz:

Dutch Shultz was an American mobster who made his fortune through organized crime, bootlegging, and racketeering. He died in 1935, but before his death, he reportedly had a safe made and filled it with $7 million in cash and bonds. He then buried it somewhere in the Catskill mountains in upstate New York. People still till this day, are looking for it with no success.

3- Jean LaFitte's Treasure:

Jean LaFitte was a French pirate (an angry one too) so good at his job, that he had to resort to burying some of his fortune. After his death between 1823 and 1830, rumors have spread that his treasure is buried in Lake Borgne, right off the coast of New Orleans. Another report has been made that his treasure is buried near the Sabine river, in a gum tree grove.

4- Nuestra Senora de Atocha:

The Nuestra Senora de Atocha was a 1622 Spanish galleon. As a Floridian myself, I know how fast a hurricane can pop up. This was the case for the Nuestra Senora de Atocha. They were headed back to Spain when they got caught in a massive hurricane off the coast of Key West, which claimed many ships (carrying precious cargo) lives. The value has been estimated to be $700 million today. According to listverse.com "In 1985, treasure hunter Mel Fisher found $500 million of the buried treasure less than 160 kilometers (100 mi) off the coast of Key West. Experts believe there is still plenty of treasure to find. The original captain’s manifest states there are still about 17 tons of silver bars, 128,000 coins of different values, 27 kilos of emeralds, and 35 boxes of gold." Now thats a good pay day.

5- San Miguel's Treasure:

One of the richest treasure fleets was assembled by Spain in 1712. This fleet of 11 ships is estimated to be worth $2 billion in gold, silver, pearls, and jewels. (WOW) The ships were planning on leaving Cuba just before the hurricane season hit, in hopes of deterring pirates and other's who want a piece of their pie. The plan did not go according to plan as history tells us. The ships were hit by what do you know... a hurricane! and everything was claimed by the sea. All the ships have been found except for one. The San Miguel. This ship is believed to contain most of the treasure. Most of the ships have been found of the east coast of Florida (thats where I live)

Maybe I should take up diving lessons? :P

Hope this was interesting!

Funny thing is that they were all found nearby or in the zone of the "Bermuda triangle". I think its Key West one of the points(?)

I think If we ever found one of those the treasure itself will be less than the things we had to do to get it.

Love the water, diving I still have not done yet. And who wouldn't want some treasure! Good read keep it up 😀

Damm makes diving into the sea really tempting. Imagine if you would find a treassure of that size.
