  • The most dangerous active volcano to date is Popocatepetl, it wears the nickname El Popo and is only 33 miles from Mexico City. El Popo releases thousands of tons of gas and ash into the air every year.

  • The volcano goes by the name of the Roman fire god. First, the Romans used the term to refer to the volcano Etna, where, according to their belief, was the smithy of Vulcan.

  • In the Middle Ages, many believed that the volcanoes were the entrance to the fiery hell.

  • Hundreds of years ago, the Aztecs who lived in Mexico, and the inhabitants of Nicaragua believed that the gods live in the lava. They sacrificed to these powerful gods beautiful young girls.

  • Over the past 400 years, almost a quarter of a million people died directly as a result of volcanic eruptions. Side effects such as hunger, climate change and diseases are most likely tripled this number.
