Mezclaba ejemplares de diferentes regiones y diferentes sabores para imitar los vinos que le interesaban. Así llegó a anotar en una libreta las fórmulas para producir diferentes vinos como el Romaneé Conti, Ponsot Clos Saint Denis, u otros. Aquí hay que hacer un inciso: cuánto más raro y más caro sea un vino, menos personas hay en el mundo que lo hayan probado, pues no son botellas que se abran cada fin de semana. A esto hay que añadirle que el vino durante los años madura, el color cambia, los sabores cambian… Por lo tanto, si bien, es cierto que los expertos coinciden en que Kurniawan tenía un don, hay que decir que se encontraba en el sector perfecto para llevar a cabo su estafa: un mundo de características subjetivas y cambiantes. Además de la mezcla, diseñaba copias idénticas de las etiquetas y, una vez impresas les aplicaba un tratamiento químico para que parecieran etiquetas antiguas. Tenía un aparato mecánico para insertar los corchos y él mismo sellaba las botellas con cera. Lo hizo a través de Acker Merral, la empresa de John Kapon. En el año 2006 sacó a subasta su primer lote de vinos, al que Rudy había puesto el apodo de “La Bodega”. John Kapon mejoró el marketing con “la mayor bodega de América”. Se trataba de un total de 1.742 lotes de botellas que terminaron vendiéndose por un valor total de 10,6 millones de dólares. 9 meses después, sacó su segunda subasta, al que tituló “La Bodega 2”, y al que John Kapon mejoró el marketing llamándolo: “posiblemente la mayor bodega del planeta”. Se trataba de 2.310 lotes que terminaron vendiéndose por un total de 24,7 millones de dólares, sobrepasando con creces el anterior record de una subasta de vinos, que se situaba en 14 millones de dólares. El éxito de Rudy Kurniawan fue una suerte para John Kapon y para Acker Merral, que se convirtió automáticamente en el líder en lo que respecta a subastas de vinos.
