La vida del hombre en la tierra va ya en su segundo milenio, en esta era común o después de Cristo. Muchos años antes de nuestra era la humanidad estuvo creciendo, construyendo y marcando hitos importantes con edificaciones sobresalientes. De ese tiempo datan las siete maravillas del mundo antiguo: las Pirámides de Egipto, los Jardines colgantes de Babilonia, El Coloso de Rodas, el Faro de Alejandría, la Estatua de Zeus, el Mausoleo de Halicarnaso y el Templo de Artemisa. Con respecto al tiempo que tiene el hombre sobre la tierra, una ciudad de 156 años puede llamar joven.
Esa es la edad que cumplió Pinar del Río, la provincia más occidental de Cuba, este 10 de septiembre, fecha en que la Reina española Isabel II le otorgó el título de ciudad. Tal distinción fue resultado de la petición del pueblo pinareño que una y otra vez requería la atención de la Metrópoli, Es decir que nuestra ciudad no cuenta ni con doscientos años, por lo tanto, califica como la ciudad más joven de Cuba.

La mayoría son viviendas de una sola planta con techo de tejas coloradas y a dos aguas. Escasa o ninguna es la ornamentación de las fachadas y pocos trabajos de herrería. Lo más significativo son sus amplios portales. Sobre todo los de la llamada calle real, nunca vinieron los reyes, pero cada pueblo colonizado les preparó una callecita por si a los monarcas les deba por llegarse por estas latitudes.

Agradezco esos portales, pues hace mucho sol, camino por ellos y les voy mostrando mi ciudad. Con esa misma idea lo hicieron sus constructores que extendieron la típica vivienda campesina hasta la ciudad. Para llegar a esta región no existían caminos y mucho menos carreteras, casi siempre la comunicación era por mar. A estos terrenos cubiertos de monte llegaron emigrantes, fundamentalmente canarios, que se expandieron desde La Habana a otras regiones del país en busca de vegas para la cría de ganado y la siembra de caña y tabaco. Ellos trajeron la espinela, la hermosísima dama de diez versos que se aplatanó en esta región y se hizo tan cubana como las palmas. Mi pasión por la décima me hace desviar del tema central, es que en todo encuentro la poesía, perdónenme amigos lectores.

Empiezo mi recorrido por el Parque la Independencia, lo más alto de la ciudad, desde aquí se domina con la vista la mayoría de las arterias principales. Por aquí empezó a extenderse el poblado. Primero estuvo asentado cerca del río Guamá, pero muy pronto hubo de buscar lugares más altos por las inundaciones propias de la época de lluvia y entonces creció en la loma donde después fuera la Plaza de armas y que es hoy el Parque de la Independencia.
El parque es amplio y arbolado. Me gusta venir en la tarde a ver los niños, jugar, montar bicicleta o patines. La gente se reúne a conversar y a refrescar el intenso calor del verano, nota interesante es que este verano es el más caluroso en la historia de la humanidad. Desde aquí se ven edificios importantes como el que ocupa Etecsa, empresa de telecomunicaciones cubana que nos pone en línea con el mundo, ayúdame Etecsa, por favor, a ver si me leen los amigos de hive. También se ve el Palacio de computación, antigua Colonia española y uno de los edificios más grandes de la ciudad.

Más abajo se encuentra el deteriorado Hotel Comercio, exponente del estilo neoclásico y patrimonio arquitectónico de esta región. Ofrece un panorama triste en el mismo centro de la ciudad. Hace muy poco acaban de anunciar que será restaurado por el grupo empresarial TABACUBA, para la construcción de un teatro y una cadena de tiendas o centro comercial.

Una casa muy atractiva, por su fortaleza, amplios ventanales y balaustres la constituye El Ayuntamiento de la Ciudad, hoy Museo de Historia. Le sigue el teatro Milanés, antes Lope de Vega. Este es el escenario de los grandes espectáculos de la ciudad, recientemente estuvo @irankpotter con su grupo de teatro Rumbos, presentando “Este tren se llama deseo”. También que fue escenario de la película La bella de la Alhambra basada en el libro “La canción de Rachel” de la autoría de Miguel Barnet.
Aún me faltan unas cuatro cuadras para llegar a la Universidad, pero me detengo en el Palacio más sobresaliente de la ciudad, majestuoso y sorprendente aunque tiene una sola planta. Les hablo del Palacio de Guash, un edificio sorprendente por su ornamentación y que es hoy el Museo de Ciencias e historia natural. En sus columnas, pórtico y capitel se posan dragones, caballitos de mar y otras criaturas, dentro hay enormes dinosaurios, tan reales que asustan a la primera vista.

Esta parte de la ciudad le llaman “El malecón”, muy peculiar el nombre porque aquí no hay mar, al menos en la ciudad, sino más allá a unos 25 kilómetros. Este malecón le cuento, fue gracias a la gestión del Comité Todo por Pinar del Río en la década del 40 del siglo pasado. Para esa fecha Pinar aún tenía varias calles sin asfaltar, carecía de acueducto, alcantarillado y un sistema educacional inestable. El 26 de noviembre de 1941, un grupo de pinareños, preocupados, por el estado deprimente de la ciudad, se reunió, citados por el Dr. Tebelio Rodríguez del Haya, para la creación de un comité que sufragado con los propios medios de sus integrantes empezaría dar respuesta a las necesidades urgentes de la ciudad. Así surgió el “Comité todo por Pinar del Río”.
Tremenda la actividad del Comité, en la esfera social, educacional, cultural, cívica y de infraestructura. En su seno nació el hermoso Himno de Pinar, escrito por la sanjuanera Rosita Delgado. Los pinareños lo interpretamos con mucho cariño en cada acto solemne después del Himno nacional y lo hacemos con mucho orgullo ante los ojos de los pobladores de otras regiones del país, que a veces nos miran con asombro. El 26 de noviembre se celebra desde entonces el día de la Dignidad pinareña. Ya casi voy llegando a mi trabajo, faltara a mi identidad si no hablara de la Universidad de Pinar del Río, institución que nació en el año 1976 y que desde entonces ha entregado miles de profesionales al país. Teniendo en cuenta que la misma fue sede exclusiva por muchos años de las carreras de Ingeniería Forestal y Geología.

Por último quiero darles unos datos de mi provincia que la hace muy interesante, Pinar es la región más verde de Cuba, es la tierra del mejor tabaco del mundo, de la Guayabita del pinar. Aquí nació Nersys Felipe, Premio nacional de literatura y Premio nacional de radio, Polo Montañez, Pedro Pablo Oliva, artista plástico de renombre internacional, el músico Pedro Junco, autor de una de las canciones que más nos identifica “Nosotros”. Pinar es la cuna de Omar Linares, Casanova y Pedro Luis Lazo, tres de los mejores peloteros de nuestro país.
Aquí nació Mijain López, quien tiene 5 medallas de oro olímpico en la lucha grecorromana. Son muy pocas las personalidades mencionadas en esta reseña. Nuestra región es fértil para el talento, en ella se han nacido estrellas en todos los ámbitos. No puedo dejar de mencionar la emisora provincial, Radio Guamá, el telecentro Telepinar y el periódico Guerrillero, medios de comunicación masiva que se ocupan de la información y recreación de nuestro pueblo.

Necesitamos los pinareños de instituciones de comercio y recreación modernas, de fácil acceso y de precios asequibles. Urge revivir la cultura y el patrimonio. Les dejo, me voy a clases, si por casualidad se encuentran con un pinareño, salúdenlo. De inmediato sabrán que están en presencia de una persona jovial, hospitalaria e inteligente. Nuestra estirpe es trabajadora, ingeniosa y de mucho amor por lo que hace. Felicidades, Pinar del Río, yo te llevo en el corazón.
