Un extraño escarabajo con cuello de girafa / A strange beetle with a giraffe neck

¡Hola amantes de los insectos! tenía un tiempito que no publicaba por aquí pero no porque no me haya topado con insectos sino que estaba aprovechando para hacer otro tipo de publicaciones. Hoy les traigo un insecto que no había visto antes y que un día encontré en mi balcón. Es un insecto muy extraño y llamativo porque parece una jirafa en miniatura jajaja.

Hello insect lovers! I hadn't posted here for a while, but not because I haven't found insects, but because I was taking the opportunity to make other types of posts. Today I bring you an insect that I hadn´t seen before and that I found on my balcony. It´s a very strange and striking insect because it looks like a miniature giraffe hahaha.

Este peculiar insecto, aunque no lo parezca, pertenece al orden de los escarabajos (coleóptera) y su nombre científico es Brentus anchorago pero comúnmente se le conoce como Gorgojo pico recto. Esta especie vive en casi todo el continente americano, desde Florida (Estados Unidos) hasta Argentina, y una de sus características más resaltantes es su dimorfismo sexual, esto significa que entre el macho y la hembras hay grandes diferencias físicas ya sea de tamaño, color, etc.

This peculiar insect, although it may not seem like it, belongs to the beetle order (Coleoptera) and its scientific name is Brentus anchorago but it´s commonly known as Straight-billed Weevil. This species lives in almost the entire American continent, from Florida (United States) to Argentina, and one of its most outstanding characteristics is its sexual dimorphism, this means that between the male and the female there are great physical differences, like size, color, etc.

Estos gorgojos pueden medir entre 15 y 52 milímetros, y el macho puede ser hasta cinco veces más largo que la hembra, aunque ambos tienen el mismo color negro con rayas verticales amarillas sobre los élitros (alas externas). Son xilófagos, es decir, se alimentan principalmente de madera y se les asocia mucho al árbol conocido como "Indio desnudo" (Bursera simaruba), donde suelen poner sus huevos para que las larvas se alimenten de alguna corteza suelta o de la madera en descomposición de este árbol.

These weevils can measure between 15 and 52 millimeters, and the male can be up to five times longer than the female, although both have the same black color with yellow vertical stripes on the elytra (outer wings). They are xylophagous, that is, they feed mainly on wood and are closely associated with the tree known as "Naked Indian" (Bursera simaruba), where they usually lay their eggs so that the larvae feed on some loose bark or decaying wood of this tree.
