GT vs DC Preview

This fixture sees 2 teams in Gujarat and Delhi who are looking to build on the wins they recorded in their opening fixtures.

Things couldn't have started much better for GT in their very first IPL game as Mohammed Shami took a wicket with the first ball. In fact, for Gujarat there were plenty more pluses to come from their game against LSG.

Hardik Pandya managed to bowl 4 overs, Rahul Tewatia who some questioned the fee GT paid for, won them the game at the death, the bowling attack looked well balanced and unlike a lot of sides in IPL 2022, Gujarat aren't waiting on big name players to arrive meaning that they can aim to get a settled and balanced squad together sooner.

In fact, balance is very much the key when you look at their team and particularly with Hardik making himself available to bowl, it looks like GT have good options in that department (Tewatia and Shankar are credible 6th bowlers but weren't needed against LSG) and the bat given that they have Rashid Khan coming in at 8 and a host of dangerous middle order hitters above him.

Perhaps the most satisfying take away for DC from their opening win is that they achieved it despite a few of their big names either not being available or not performing on the day. You'd imagine the likes of Warner, Marsh, Pant, Powell and Nortje will have a major impact at some point in this IPL but it was the contributions of Lalit Yadav, Khaleel Ahmed and Kuldeep Yadav that really stood out an ultimately got DC off to a winning start.

You could argue that DC have been the best team over the last couple of IPL seasons but that they've peaked too early in the competition and ultimately fallen short of a first title. Therefore, having those players to come in a little bit later and maintain early momentum might be just what they need.

Again, we are looking at a Delhi team that is well balanced with plenty of options to choose from and it'd be a surprise if they didn't at least make the play-offs again this year.

With the dominant CSK and MI both looking a little shaky in the early stages of the tournament they'll be a few franchises out there thinking that they might not get many better chances to get a hold of that trophy in a couple of months time.

I did comment in the preview for Gujarat's first game that if there is a weakness in their squad, it was likely to be in the top order.

For a player of Shubman Gill's undoubted class, he played a horrible shot to get out early in the run chase. The young right-hander is still trying to find the right tempo for his innings in the T20 format but particularly on the pitches we have at the moment, I think he just needs to trust his technique and stroke play and simply hit the gaps. Things might get a little tricker for him once the fielding restrictions are removed but as we've noted above, GT have plenty of power hitters later on.

Shubman Gill T20 career record vs left-arm fast medium bowling

Khaleel Ahmed bowled a very impressive new ball spell for DC last weekend and will be hoping to set the tone again in this match. The good news for GT and is that Shubman Gill has a very good record against left-arm seamers.

Similarly Vijay Shankar at number 3 failed to contribute in Monday's game but he does at least have a good record in previous appearances at the Maharashtra Stadium.

As we move into the middle order, one of the key battles could be between captain Hardik Pandya and chinaman bowler Kuldeep Yadav. That Kuldeep has hit early season form is a massive bonus for DC. We all know how potent he can be but he seemed to have lost confidence and was bowling too slowly over the last couple of seasons. That spark returned in the match against Mumbai and it did appear that he was bowling a little quicker and flatter at times too.

Hardik Pandya T20 record vs wrist spinners

Hardik's T20 record shows that he scores freely against all types of bowling with the exception of wrist spin, where his stats drop quite dramatically. If he wishes to continue to bat at number 4 then that could pose a problem for Gujarat although they do have options that would allow them to tweak the line-up and bring about more favourable match-ups.

GT bowling vs DC batting

In Seifert and Shaw, DC look like they have an opening pair who can certainly go after the quicker bowlers while Gujarat have probably the paciest attack in the IPL at the moment with Aaron, Ferguson and Shami all capable of hitting 140+ and even topping 150 on occasion.

Similar to GT though, the real challenge might come in the middle overs when slower bowling is introduced. I'm intrigued to see how Rovman Powell will perform in this IPL especially given the in balance in his stats against pace vs spin. In this match he'll have to come up against Rashid Khan and potentially Rahul Tewatia if GT can engineer a favourable match-up.

The man that DC will be hoping to combat that threat is captain Rishabh Pant who in contrast to Powell has an excellent record against spin, particularly wrist spin (ave 61, S/R 137). His match-up against Rashid Khan is also favourable so while he is still around GT may be reticent to unleash both leggies.
