Strategic Vision for 2023 (Witness Update)

image.png

Now that we're in the new year its time to make some plans and look ahead. Its challenging to come up with a strategic vision from a personal perspective when dealing with minute day to day type details on an ongoing basis which are all important. To look ahead I have to take a pause and forget.

So to get to drafting a plan for the year best to just go through the routine for starters.

Typical day:

This is a mix of witness (governance) and general Hive type tasks.

  • check Twitter and other 'hiveblocks' medias, post as relevant, reply to legitimate messages
  • check on the Hive discord and telegram channels
  • check emails, reply as needed
  • check in with active partnership discussions and keep those going (there's about ten of these at any given moment but they don't all move at the same pace)
  • touch base with various promotional projects (usually DHF type or Value Plan projects) and assist them as needed
  • work on documents, either publications or other types (write or provide feedback)
  • make sure non-protocol infrastructure that is my responsibility is functional and fix/update when needed
  • make sure primary node and backup nodes are properly functional
  • check on project servers and sites, fix where needed

This is all just regular type of activities and don't change. Depending on what's going on they take different amounts of time but can usually be done in about 2-4 hours, split during the day. Reason its split is because some actions need to be run through more than once. Node and infrastructure checks take a few minutes. Partnerships and promotional projects take the longest and depending on what's going on can eat up a whole day. I'm not counting average of working on the witness or API (which hopefully will be back up soon) in here except for the basic checks as those don't fall into daily events and they don't take long. Also discounting irregular Hive deliverables that depend on what's going on. Further optimizing the workflow for these minor tasks needs to take place this year to limit the time spent and free it up for these larger Hive deliverables. In general, now that Hive is long-established I allocate about 30-40 hours to Hive over a 7-day week.

The biggest hangup is Discord communication which is conducive for socializing but not for work. I miss key messages at times which is not acceptable as I have the responsibility to reply with some semblance of urgency. I'm terminating the app on all systems except for PC in hopes that active conversations can stop being marked read, which is sub-optimal to then go through and manually verify as having actually been read. For this reason all partnership type discussions I prefer to keep on Telegram so nothing is missed.

The other hangup is illness over the last month or so which no amount of preventative measures seem to keep away.

Strategic vision

My only goal here is the success of Hive. As we age, social impact supersedes personal success. What helped Hive in the past was generally going the complete opposite direction from all these startups and corporate types, which is unexpected. The reason is they're meant for a quick turnaround and Hive is meant for a longstanding existence beyond the typical roadmap of a few quarters. In the coming year I'm going to put my all in seeking out new opportunities and getting Hive out there.

1. Improve decentralization

In November last year a large portion of Solana's validators were shut down by Hetzner. There's a good short overview that was subsequently published by Blockdaemon, one of the validators, with lessons learned.

While much like Solana, Hive can survive this type of datacenter shutdown (the same type of shutdown is not possible with Hive but let's just leave that and use the example) due to its present decentralization, being prepared is vital. An important point I want to deliver on this coming year is decentralizing my servers throughout the planet geographically. We want to get where any regional issues or power outages can't affect the full scope of the Hive infrastructure. Think a server in Europe, a server in South America, a server in Africa. I can't say what countries or what datacenters but I started looking around. Not all are suitable for Hive.

This isn't the first round of infrastructure decentralization by a long shot but I didn't get the results I wanted in previous attempts to balance the servers between North American and European locations. I will still keep them around but I don't think that's good enough as power outage recovery here when it comes to private servers (servers stored in private locations, such as in corporate buildings) is garbage. Part of the problem is whenever there's a power outage or other similar type of an issue that affects service delivery, restoration is slow.

You may have heard about the Rogers Outage in Canada last year which took down almost every notable network including police services. I don't have all my personal services on one provider and was able to get through it without too much of a hassle except for extensive hotspot use. But it's a good lesson not to keep everything dependent on that one service. The only solution is decentralization of assets and like Blockdaemon pointed out, a good plan.

2. Support others

Hive won't succeed with the old crab bucket mentality. You don't need to push down others on Hive in order to succeed and there is no real need to keep Hive-based dapps and products in competition. There are about 2.5 mil accounts on Hive right now.

Can a newly discovered opportunity help another dapp? Can some promotional project be used to showcase a whole range of Hive dapps? When Hive dapps and projects succeed everyone succeeds. That doesn't mean we got to blindly trust new projects that come off flashy and promise the moon but what that means is we need to work together, communicate with one another, share opportunities.

The crab bucket analogy is rudimentary in a way and speaks to an artificial ecosystem which is amplified by centralization. The basis of the theory is mutual failure through competition. Let's keep going with it for argument sake but then let's twist it some. The crabs in the bucket are trying to get out over the top of other crabs because they are in the bucket. The crabs are driven by the desire to succeed on the backs of their fellow crabs in direct competition with them because no other way exists. Here's a good write-up on this. Those who exhibit this mentality are powered by jealousy and shellfishness selfishness.

Crabs belong in the ocean. It's that simple. So why are we talking about these crabs in the bucket and treating this ecosystem as a bucket when the ecosystem has long evolved from its original pre-Hive vision that had no scalability or longevity as goals? There is no competition among Hive community members. One member won't succeed by shutting down others. The Hive ecosystem may be a sea right now but it has the opportunity to evolve into an entire ocean. And that's because Hive is meant to scale and abolished the hierarchical structure (of seeking approval from a specific account) that kept the userbase contained in a bucket. By abolishing centralization it destroyed the bucket.

Sure some people still think that the DPoS system in itself is a hierarchy and that's because of stake-based voting which directly affects monetization of all forms. Governance indeed is tiered. But this monetization is only the Hive-protocol-based reward pool and distribution style monetization. Anyone can build whatever they want on Hive. The project build doesn't need to have anything to do with curation or the DHF. The project can simply use the blockchain as it's meant to be used; as a protocol with additional value-added layers and modular plugins to build on. If we look at Hive objectively without any interference from any personal biases then we can clearly see that this is the best blockchain to build on because there is no centralized control. And the more that's built on Hive, the larger the ocean.

3. Expand and organize

Hive has a high learning curve because there are numerous ways to get anything done. Take lite accounts which keep coming up these days; there are many ways to achieve them but in the end its a fine balance between a lesser level of responsibility and finality. Anything on the blockchain has an element of finality attached to it; once a transaction is broadcast its on the chain. I am aiming to end up putting together something along the lines of a research paper on Hive onboarding or a sub-component such as these lite accounts. It's a project I already started and am getting my thoughts together on. I'll save discussion for another post.

Personal improvement

I will write more and try and get out at least one post a week as a goal. I'd say that it would be a personal post and not a Hive post but I'd be lying. I don't know if that's possible because I don't have too much to say on topics of any interest to anyone, but I will make an honest effort. As far as new year's resolutions go, I will try and end my hatred of Ruby.

So in what way is the hive blockchain organizing efforts to improve lives or takes economic market share?

A lot of ways are just native to the Hive protocol: HIVE as an investment, HBD APR instead of savings accounts at banks, general HIVE and HBD use instead of banking, blogging/writing content monetization, content recording for IP record, barrier-free access to development, barrier-free access to using HIVE and HBD as payment systems, etc.

There's a lot of projects on Hive that help improve people's lives. Value Plan water wells for example help the entire community. This Christmas people including myself donated towards several dinners for groups of people who wouldn't have had anything. We also got gifts for three groups of kids. Earlier than than that we got funds out for hurricane relief in two countries. There are a lot of activities going on like that all the time. Hive brings people together and allows us to help each other. There's no purpose of a centralized organization of activities because there are too many activities and people in all corners of the world who help and are helped. But in general, the point of Hive is everyone can build something out of it or take action without dealing with fees or wondering if a rug pull is coming.

Not sure what you mean about economic market share aside from the predominance of Hive among other blockchain ecosystems and coins. To that we're working on it non-stop. Right now it's already Monday in most parts of the world so work is restarting.

By using Hive HBD as a currency for transactions in the community gardens, you are taking advantage of the growing trend towards cryptocurrencies and their increasing adoption. By offering goods at lower prices in Hive HBD, you are potentially attracting a new customer base that is interested in using cryptocurrencies in their daily transactions. By accepting Hive HBD, you are also creating an opportunity for people to use their cryptocurrencies for real-world purchases and contributing to the wider adoption of cryptocurrencies.

AKA: Producing an economic benefit by swapping the currency of value exchange. With all the food inflation we are seeing within the United States Dollar a move towards a currency market that has seen less inflation should see a positive economic benefit by a savings of their USD to use else where on rent, other bills or entertainment while also increasing the adoption of the platform.

For me the easiest example would be to use eggs
EX: Price Of Eggs

Store Price: $ 9.99
Farm to Table Price: $ 4.99
Crypto Price: $ 1.99

Where now there has been a freeing up of a total of $7.01 - $3.01 where the individual who would have purchased at USD store price would now have money to spend elsewhere. The time is right for a solution like this. It may not be profitable for me to sell produce and goods for this steep of a discount. I believe in the project so I am putting my foot where my mouth is and committing to change. Plus at 20% interest APR I can take that hit up front and get rewarded for it later own.

Nothing different from what I already do..... Sow my seeds today to reap the benefits tomorrow.

Sorry I may talk a lil too much about these matters are on my mind a lot working towards committing to them by action. I would rather set up for success than commit to failure. There are just so many opportunities I see that I don't think others see so it was nice to see that there was some type of organized effort to make some changes.

I have like $80 in my Hive account where can I find these projects to send some money too. It was my plan to save it for a rainy day. Its raining outside 💦 😂

Appreciate the update. Looking forward to great things happening via this ecosystem.

The onboarding process is still a huge hindrance, imho.

I’ve been talking to @arcange to get some ideas. He provides a paper wallet in PDF form for accounts he helps set up. For my students this semester, I will be doing something similar, but with multiple wallets, separating the Master Password and Owner Key from the other keys.

Incorporating this concept into @hiveonboard or some similar onboarding portal would be great. Every semester I have one or two students who lose their private keys.

In terms of growing awareness of Hive and its usefulness, I sincerely believe HiveAuth is huge in its implications. We just need to get everyday Web2 sites to start incorporating it into their login pages. Idk the best way to make that happen, but showing people that they can use a Hive account and Keychain Mobile to completely eliminate password entry could lead to explosive growth and awareness.

I see what you want to do with the keys which is basically a type of air gapping. Onboarding is going to continue being a pain until we either swing it towards tiered accounts in some way. The problem with removing the payment for accounts in general is the fact we've got named accounts which are worth something in themselves. The moment everything is free the account names will be botted and only trash will remain. But at the same time, while people do want to pay for accounts and get their desired names, they don't all own crypto to pay with. And this is a problem some onboarders come across which is finality. An account is created but keys granted but the credit card used to pay for the account can be disputed and reverse the payment. So your solution could come into play well here.

The problem with removing the payment for accounts in general is the fact we've got named accounts which are worth something in themselves.

I've got no problem with charging for accounts. I give free accounts to my students, but I don’t think they should be free, because of bots and squatters. In fact, I think 3 HIVE for an account is way below the true value.

I would like to see 1- and 2-letter prefixes and suffixes enabled, and the exclusive rights to each sold, perhaps as NFTs. And possibly do the same with 3-letters also.

100,000 HIVE for 1-letter, 10,000 for 2-letter, 1,000 for 3-letter.

That would enable new tribes to guarantee authenticity. For example, I create a new tribe with QED token and purchase the qed.xxxxxx prefix. That way everyone knows that an account starting with qed. is an official account.

More importantly, though, it would enable businesses that want to build on Hive to reserve exclusive Hive account “domains”. For example, Twitter could purchase the t.xxxxxx prefix. Then they could create Hive accounts on behalf of their users that are t.existingtwitterhandle. Twitter could manage the private keys for each user until such time each user is ready to do so on their own.

Having exclusive control over a block of account names could be a big plus for certain future app builders.

What you mean is that there should be exclusivity to some naming combinations. Right now I can make a bunch of qed.accounts but the distinction in naming means nothing as its still within the name parameters allotted by the protocol. So new names would need to be longer in general or the addition to the name wouldn't be part of the name itself but some other field, which is more plausible.

What you mean is that there should be exclusivity to some naming combinations.

Yes. For 3-letter prefixes and suffixes, since those are already allowed, there could be some confusion. Moving to exclude them in the future in order to offer them to new tribes might not be worth it due to that potential confusion.

I first thought of this when I created a new tribe and token (VYB) and started creating accounts for special purposes, all using vyb. as a prefix. Then I noticed someone posting with an official-sounding account using the prefix. That’s when it occurred to me there could be real utility in acquiring exclusivity for that 3-letter prefix and/or suffix.

For example, I could use vyb.xxxxx for all official accounts and let anyone create a hivename.vyb account after they prove they control hivename.

Providing exclusive access to 1- and 2-letter suffixes and prefixes would be easy, because they are already excluded. We would just need to provide a mechanism for purchasing those rights and tying the account-creation rights for a given suffix or prefix to a given account.

I think the ocean analogy is more than apt. Whenever I talk about Hive with my wife, friends inside or outside of Hive I have always said that Hive is intended to be some sort of giant place that houses thousands and why not millions of projects and Dapps. How appropriate the crab bucket analogy has also been, to have a "crab bucket" type of mentality, is to not understand the ever expanding vastness of Hive.

Indeed Hive is the best blockchain to build because it has a solid decentralization and although it can be misinterpreted, certainly nothing has to do the Dpos protocol with the construction, I think the confusion lies in that the Hive landscape is limited, and only when you open your eyes more you understand that the decentralization is staggered and is built that way for a purpose.

My passage through Hive has been a constant learning and every time I try to dive into the deep waters to learn or understand something new I realize that Hive is well thought out, nothing is put at random.

I was once asked what is Hive's direct competition, I thought a bit and reflected, maybe the quickest and most thoughtless answer could have been to name another blockchain but it's not like that. The answer I said is that Hive has no competition because its projection, solid construction and vision make it particularly unique, but for the person to have a broader idea, I said: "Hive aims to set itself up in web3, as Google has done in web2" Maybe I do not know if it was a valid analogy, but my intention was that the person took away the idea that Hive is not a corner of the web but an incredibly immense project. There is nothing more centralized than web2 and it has become incredibly immense because it was all there was, but now with web3 the digital monarchies are faltering.

Dear @guiltyparties I hope you have an excellent year 2023, and I have full confidence that this year very good things are coming for our blockchain, it was a pleasure to read you.

Thank you for your words and for taking the time.

Our direct competitors are other blockchains which are suitable for building. Like Solana which I mentioned with due respect, because it's a serious competitor. Another one could be something like Near for instance. There are a lot of parallels which are mostly related to development, scaling and resilience, although the blockchains themselves are not similar protocol-wise. Other DPoS chains are not competitors because DPoS in itself is flexible enough to be scaled down for something like Blurt which is used to host one site. These other chains typically have a specific purpose and goal or are highly centralized and aren't a fit for outside development. Development on them would be a huge financial gamble and frankly either impossible or not worth it. So we don't need to pretend to even compete with them. We are competing in a friendly manner (since the cryptosphere is large enough for everyone) with actual chains of various protocol types designed for scalability and adoption.

Greetings, I love your vision and conviction with which you speak about Hive, from here you can count on our support. I think it's great the opportunities that Hive offers (I also compare it to an ocean, hahaha), that's why any project and/or that is beneficial to the ecosystem also benefits us all. Understanding this is fundamental.

Can a newly discovered opportunity help another dapp? Can some promotional project be used to showcase a whole range of Hive dapps?

Hive has shown beyond measure how great it is. Through its developmental projects around the world. If we look at Cuba, hive is doing so well that some have accepted HBD as a means of payment. This is telling us how growing and supportive hive has been over the years.
In my country, Ghana is another great one. Where mcsamm and Collinz are doing a great job in providing us with water. Water is like gold over here because it is scarce. If Hive can give this to us for free, they see us as the world’s saviors and leaders. All thanks to mcsamm and @valueplan for these initiatives.

I have a project idea and I wish to discuss it with you. In as much as we are making life better in our communities, I can’t forget where I grew from. In a home where it is hard to get an education. I can still remember those days I will have to manage my books for a term. It hasn’t been easy as education is concerned. I have a proposal for an educational project. This educational project led to the creation of Hive Students Hub.
I want to discuss it with you and see how well we can help make education better for a start in northern Ghana. I don’t know if it will be fine to get your discord. My telegram handle is @Abdul_Pandev
Thank you. I will await your reply

Hello Sir @guiltyparties recently I verified my account with Facebook with hivewatchers I ask hivebuzz about the verified badge he told me to ask you about the verified badge.

If I can help with anything to get the badge do let me know I'm happy to cooperate thank you in advance.
