Amazing Tirano and its breathtaking church from XVI-th century

I have traveled to Italy in many ways, mainly by airplanes, buses and cars.

One of the cities in Italy is unique to me as it is the only one I have traveled to by train :) That's beautiful Tirano, touching the Southern slopes of the mighty Alps.

That beautiful establishment is the end point on the railway line housing the Bernina Express, a scenery train service, crossing the Swiss and the Italian Alps, climbing high above, touching the shores of turquoise lakes and snowy peaks, even in the summer.

I had the pleasure to visit Tirano with a close friends of mine who live in Switzerland and that day we decided to have a lunch and then take a walk on the city streets and visit a famous Catholic church.

I have to say, I found the streets of Tirano calm, relatively quiet and pleasant to walk on. There aren't any huge buildings or skyscrapers so it all feels quite cozy to me. A lot of trees, bushes and flowers growing beside the streets and making it all look very green.

After walking for a few minutes we finally reached our destination. The cathedral is called "Santuario della Madonna di Tirano".

I am not going to go into some historical details and info here but if you'd like to find out more, here is the Wiki page in Italian: https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Santuario_della_Madonna_di_Tirano

Unfortunately no English version of that page. The other available languages or versions, at the moment, are Deutsch and Lombard.

The square in front of the entrance of the church is indeed stunning. Huge mosaics and a lot of space, I suppose there are masses that cannot contain all of the pilgrims inside so I guess some services are placed outside as well.

I cannot remember if it was permitted to take photos inside but judging by the clerk with the hands on his waist, it was not :) Still, I managed to take one shot before shutting my camera temporary down.

After spending some time inside the cathedral, we walked a few other streets of Tirano and then found a cozy restaurant where we have that planned lunch. I can say only good words about the food but the most interesting accent of that experience was our waiter, a young Italian who was speaking more languages than all of us combined! Trust me on that, as the son of my friends is born in Switzerland and speaks more than five languages already, in his early teen age :)

Time to jump back on the train and travel back to my friends' home in Switzerland so I had the chance to see the cathedral from the window of the train.

It was great that the speed of the train isn't that high in the city as this gives the chance to take more photos from more angles.

I wasn't the only one with a camera. All the windows were full with lenses and the faces of the impressed tourists.

It was a real pleasure to take a ride on this train, lots of scenery views along the railway.

... and here we left the city boundaries where a strange abandoned building could be seen. I wasn't sure if it was an old hotel, or spa, probably, or a prison. Or a mental hospital. I was grateful that we are entering back the Alps so I can fill my eyes with more green landscapes...

I hope you've enjoyed that ride with me! :)

It seems that all the northern Italian towns have the same atmosphere and tranquility that you describe. 😊
I am surprised that photography was forbidden in the church. I've only been to one church in Western Europe where photography was forbidden, and it wasn't in Italy. And from what I read in the Wikipedia page you provided, I'm now sorry you couldn't take more pictures. This church must be extremely beautiful!
Thank you very much for this awesome walk! It brought back old memories in me. From the time when I thought Italy was the most beautiful country on earth. 😍

That's true, for me too :)
I am not absolutely sure about the photography inside, I just remember the negative vibes :)
It's one of the most beautiful countries to travel to, indeed :)

I actually found your 'mental hospital' on the map 😃 This is a habit I acquired when I was doing stock photography. I was curious to know what exactly this building was. It turned out to be something completely different. 😎 Can you guess?
A castle! That's Castello di Piattamala 😊
