Should the DAO have bulk purchase bonuses for Rebellion packs?

in Hive Polls4 months ago

The team has let me know that there have been several requests and concerns related to the removal of bulk pack purchase bonuses for Rebellion Packs with the recent changes to the voucher system. Since the team is only selling the packs on behalf of the DAO, I'm going to present a few options here to see which one has the most stake-weighted support and then I will build and run a proposal based on that feedback (or not depending on the outcome).

No Bulk Purchase Bonus

Keep things as they are right now. No bulk purchase bonus packs.

4%/8%/12%

If this option wins, I will run a proposal to offer bulk purchase bonus packs for the Rebellion set at the following rates:

  • 100 - 499 packs get 4% bonus packs
  • 500 - 1999 packs get 8% bonus packs
  • 2000 packs and up get 12% bonus packs

5%/10%/15%

If this option wins, I will run a proposal to offer bulk purchase bonus packs for the Rebellion set at the following rates:

  • 100 - 499 packs get 5% bonus packs
  • 500 - 1999 packs get 10% bonus packs
  • 2000 packs and up get 15% bonus packs

10%/15%/20%

If this option wins, I will run a proposal to offer bulk purchase bonus packs for the Rebellion set at the following rates:

  • 100 - 499 packs get 10% bonus packs
  • 500 - 1999 packs get 15% bonus packs
  • 2000 packs and up get 20% bonus packs

I think 15 % or 20 % Bonus packs hurts the economy of packs and cards. But with a small incentive of 5 % on buying at least 100 Packs I strongly believe that it will lead to more sales:
These 5 % only benefit those who hold and play the cards, because of market fees.
Only having a 5 % bonus won't lead to overprinting, because players have no reason of arbitrage. But it might cause players to buy a little bit more for themselfs.
This might be a win-win soulution.

I've only been playing for 3 years but as a relative noob- Splinterlands has always offered Bonus Packs with bulk purchases.

I always thought it was a really good marketing tool to encourage pack sales.

And Splinterlands has always been wrong to make those sales decisions. Evidence? Check the CL pack price is secondary market.

Splintetlands is under a new and improved management now.

We say: NEVER AGAIN!

Thanks for Clearing that up for me- as I said I'm just a noob and don't know all about these things.
I thought that Rebellion, Riftwatchers, et al. had been sold with the 'bulk buy discount'.

IF, as you say, CL was the only edition sold with that discount and
IF, as you say, that was the only reason that CL was such a disaster then
I agree.

WE'RE NOT GOING BACK!

Sale of the packs have traditionally been 'gamemaker' decision. It still is. Post CL we are trying to get away from bulk discounts. Riftwatcher was a mini-set, it is part of CL. RB is the first set we tried to get out of it, by introducing conflicts, but there were still some bulk discounts, based on vouchers. That is also a concept we are trying to get rid off.

Its like piloting a big ship, it is not so easy to turn quickly.

I don't think a bulk discount is needed.
We want people to only buy as many packs as they need/think they need.
Any bulk discount only takes away from the value of a pack.

Fair enough. I was hoping that we'd do a reduced rate if people do want to bring them back, but I'm personally 100% fine with never having bulk discounts again.

This is a marketing/sales strategy question, why leave it to voting? or maybe at least show some data/analysis on the pros/cons so that people are able to choose objectively.

Don't we want more sales? So probably the question is more on what is the cost-benefit of giving discounts, is it worth it?

Historically, many people have just used the bulk purchases to buy packs and flip them on the market which undercuts the in-game sales as they're just min-maxing the spread. Some people do buy them for personal benefit, but my assumption is those people would likely by them either way.

Up until like a week or two ago we had them and that's most likely why you can get packs for around $3 on the secondary market right now.

Although I’ve always been happy to make use of them, bulk purchases are detrimental to regular sales, at least for the larger amounts (500 or 2500 packs).
A small extra bonus (5%) for the 100 packs might help people to buy just that extra for themselves without incentivising flipping by whales.

When purchasing how can the game distinguish a click of a whale or a minnow? Or even a bot farm expert in flipping? Let me answer: the game can't distinguish

Someone who is buying 2500 packs in bulk is probably going to be flipping at least part of them. There’s no reason this should be encouraged in any way. Since, as you say, there’s no way to distinguish between a flipper and someone who’s buying to complete his set, buying large amounts should not be incentivised any further than buying smaller amounts of 100 packs.

No bulk discount.

Buy 1 Ferarri or 10 Ferarri, no discount

I dont think a discount for bulk buys is a good idea, It seemed to big a huge fail for the game with chaos legion

Thanks for sharing! - @azircon

I would like to see this based on SPS staked for at least 3 months

100K SPS staked for 3 months get 5%
300K SPS staked for 3 months get 10%

with no bulk discounts still mean ppl will buy only what they need and encourage more sps staking benefits

maybe things like soulbound stuff (i.e skins) could be given as incentive to buy bulk

THE PACKS AREN'T SELLING ! That's the problem... with bonus packs atlease , we encourage the pack sales... you'd feel like buying backs - even when not needed... only because the idea of "free packs" sounds great

No discounts

I was vocal about this even as I was top 6 in packs and exploring it. Pack discounts only give an arb opportunity for bulk buyers to profit. It hurts the value of the cards and everyone who isn't buying in bulk loses, including the company.

The same actually applies to airdrops too. Getting rid of those was a massive win.
