Last Saturday evening, I went to the bank of the Haihe River with high hopes. This night view had been upgraded for the SCO Summit, with new lights on 217 buildings and 14 bridges — something I’d been looking forward to for a long time.
The lights were really wonderful, just as I’d hoped. Colors moved across the buildings, and lights formed shapes on the bridges. Every part looked nice, making the Haihe night bright and beautiful. But the crowd soon spoiled this joy. Even with traffic police helping out, it took 30 minutes just to walk across Jiefang Bridge. Then we got stuck in the crowd for over 10 minutes. The crowd felt overwhelming, and waiting made me anxious. Little by little, I lost interest in watching. In the end, I took a few quick photos and decided to go back.
Surprisingly, I felt good on the way back. As I cycled back, I passed the colorful buildings. and the cool evening wind touched my face. The road ahead looked clear, and I could breathe easily. At that moment, I realized: if you stay away from crowds, you can enjoy the night view more peacefully. Later, I thought: instead of putting up with the crowd there, I could go home and watch the official aerial video. That light show would probably look much more amazing.
On Saturday, I rode to Shuishang Park in the morning and to the Haihe River and back in the evening.Roughly speaking, I rode more than 16 kilometers. On Sunday, I couldn’t get out of bed and stayed home all day. This state — “either I don’t move at all, or I overdo it once I start” — is a bit annoying.
sometimes, when we go after things we look forward to, we may have small problems. If we think about it in another way, we might find unexpected peace.
